TT, Shump, and Jefferson could get us close to a star player money wise right? Lets hope some GM hopefully in the Central hates GS that much they give one away to us.
Thought this through a bit more and how the Cavs could land Melo without trading anyone of consequence. No team is going to give the Knicks much value at this point. It's basically going to be a complete salary dump.
Anyway, here's my two moves to make the Cavs a GS killer:
Trade #1
Cavs Get:
Robert Covington
Gerald Henderson
2017 2nd Rounder
76ers Get:
Shump
Rights to Cedi
Why for the Cavs?
Covington is 6'9", 215, long, extremely tough defensively, could guard Green or Durant, and has shown the ability to shoot the 3 in the past. Would be great to pair with LBJ in small ball lineups. Adds a dynamic to the bench that the Cavs have never had. Will discuss Henderson in second trade.
Why for the 76ers?
With Simmons coming back this season, there isn't as much of an immediate need for Covington. Covington will also be a free agent following next season and I'm not so sure Philly is going to want to pay him what he commands given they have Simmons in tow. They have next to nothing at SG and could use a solid veteran on the team.
The 76ers really liked Cedi and they knew a lot about him as Cedi and Saric played together in Turkey. If they go Ball/Fox at #3, the core of Ball/Fox, Cedi, Simmons, Saric, and Embiid is damn good moving forward. They also have a ton of cap space as well as two 1sts next year. They'd be in a great position moving forward.
Trade #2
Cavs Get:
Melo
Knicks Get:
Henderson
Frye
RJ
Why for the Cavs? Duh
Why for the Knicks?
Knicks are sending out $24.5 mill in salary and only receiving $19.3 mill in return, an instant savings of over $5 mill. Henderson is making $9 mill this year of which only $1 mill is guaranteed, meaning they could cut him and instantly save $8 mill. RJ is making $2.5 mill and I fully expect him to retire after this year, especially if he gets traded to the Knicks. Channing will have one year left at $7.8 mill. If he doesn't retire, I'm sure the Knicks could likely buy him out at somewhere around $4-5 mill.
While they wouldn't be getting any player assets out of it, the Knicks would have the potential of immediately cutting somewhere in the range of $18 mill of the cap this year and getting out of the $28 mill in the last year of Melo's contract. This would give them somewhere in the neighborhood of $55 mill in free agency this year.
This would seem to be a big win for everyone involved. The Cavs would have some other moves to make to fill out the bench and would have to figure out lineups, but I'm assuming it'd be something like this:
PG: Kyrie
SG: LeBron, Smith, Korver?
SF: Melo, Covington
PF: Love, Covington
C: TT
If the right trade came along, maybe you entertain moving TT for more of a shot-blocker at C. I wouldn't trade him just to trade him, but I think it makes sense if you can get a 2-for-1 type deal.
The possibilities are endless on this though.
BIG Lineup:
PG: LeBron
SG: Covington
SF: Melo
PF: Love
C: TT

Rest LeBron Lineup:
