The Orlando Magic Thread

The Nets could trade Lopez for a pretty good wing to make room for Howard, if Howard decided to go there. You'd have a pretty decent Big 3 with DWill, Howard, and whatever wing they could get (someone on a similar level to Iggy, I think is possible for Lopez), and they wouldn't have the glaring weakness at center that the Heat have. Imagine if the Heat simply had Howard's defensive presence. Their offense is already top 5 in the league and their centers all suck on offense except when Z is on... if the Nets had 3 pretty big scorers plus Dwight's defense in the middle, it'd be game over for most teams. Obviously the Heat could probably compete in the East, but Boston will likely be too old, and perhaps Chicago if they continue to improve.

With Lopez still on his rookie contract, there aren't many good wings available for $3-4mil/year.

turkoglu is starting to look like the same turkoglu from toronto and phoenix, must be all the pizza and cigerettes he smokes rather than working on his endurance

Turkoglu is looking like Turkoglu. . . he was fat and lazy in '08 and '09 too

What about Howard, Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon in LA with the Clippers? That has been thrown around instead of the Lakers.

People are sleeping on the Magic. They showed yesterday why everyone should be terrified of them. Without Howard, they almost knocked off the prematurely crowned Bulls. Hedo and Brandon Bass were ice cold, and Gilbert put up a dud, but they were still in it.

They can get hot as fire from deep, and with Howard providing decent defense, and an interior threat, they could be unstoppable. The defense is decent thanks to Howard. I would not put it past them to knock off the Bulls. The lineup Ryan Anderson, Hedo, Jameer Nelson, J-Rich, and Howard is basically a pick your poison situation. They have guys who have been to the finals. The Bulls have Noah, who gives up a lot of strength to D-Howard. The Celtics lost Perkins. The Heat have Joel Anthony/Z. I would not be surprised to see the East come down to a Florida series and then Orlando advancing. The parallels with the Cavs of 2 years ago are great, and I think we had the better superstar, but the Magic stopped us in our tracks. If they beat up on the Hawks in 5 and get their confidence up, the Bulls would be remiss to not watch the game tape of our series.

You know, Dwight (and every other player doing the same, which would include Deron Williams) is really starting to piss me off. We saw this with LeBeon already, and I found it annoying, but why is it about "what can management do for me?". Just because you sign an extension, it doesn't mean your franchise is just going to stop trying to win a championship.

He talks about only wanting to live in Orlando. OK, then commit to the franchise and sign the damn extension. It's so much harder to build a team when your best player refuses to fully invest himself. I'm sick of today's players worrying about the front office getting them help. You let them worry about that. That is their job. Your job is to be the best player you can be, and try to win. Just look at Dirk. That guy never went to the public and said, "they need to get me help." He might have done it privately, but we'll never know. What he did do is work on his game as much as possible until he became the league's single toughest player to cover.

You really want to be somewhere, commit. This idea that a team won't try as hard to win a title if their best player signs an extension is ridiculous.

You can thank KG, AI, and Kobe for this bullshit sentiment flowing around the NBA.

Howard of all people I will defend on this subject. They took on Hedo's contract and Gilbert Areans.. even with an amensty clause this team is fucked. They owe Gilbert 63 million over the next three seasons. Thats 40 % of the proposed salary cap. Then they owe Hedo 30 million over the next three. Thats 30 million of your cap gone before you pay Howard. So essentially you have the salaries of the big three tied up into the Magic knowing at this point that they suck. They have zero wiggle room. I hope they find away to make it work, but I dont see how. Otis should have been fired.

True, but I think a lot of that was tied into needing to get a ring for Dwight. They were dumb moves, but they were desperation moves. If Dwight had committed, maybe Thorpe passes on those deals and let's VC's contract run out. Instead, he hoped Hedo would bring back some of that 09 magic, and it backfired miserably.

I guess but then you have this quote about the trade ..

Howard, though, said he knew nothing about any possible trades.

"I'd like to see us trade some of our 'L's for some 'W's,' Howard said Saturday. "In the locker room, we haven't talked about it at all.''

How do ou make trades to make him happy that you havent even discussed with him? Flawed logic imo.

I'll just say for the record the Magic were foolish in breaking up the team that hammered the Cavs..all they needed to do was a tweek..talk about knee-jerk reactions..

I'll concede that point then. I didn't know they didn't ask him. Was just throwing out a theory.

My main point though is don't publicly say you want to be somewhere, then refuse to really commit. If management botched the situation, just say that's why you're leaving. In this case, I can't see people getting upset because the moves really did backfire.
