We are getting closer. Given the current state of our team and many moveable assets we have, it figures to be a fairly active time.

Therefore, I've created this thread and will post news and updates for those who don't want to navigate endlessly through other threads.

I'll try to update daily, depending on the quality of the news.

Let's start with a countdown:

Updates 2/3

Henry Abbott
ESPN Insider Chad Ford predicts an "epic trade deadline" because of this NBA season's strange set of circumstances where many teams are tanking, and thus are willing to part with talented players.

Shelburne believes a third team, perhaps the Utah Jazz, who have multiple draft picks and expiring contracts could enter the fray for Gasol and help facilitate a trade. She also stated the Lakers and Cavaliers haven’t ended trade talks since Bynum was sent to the Chicago Bulls.

@DavidZavac Frankly, I think they'll have trouble moving just about anybody.

@Ryan_Mourton: rap with me Steve. Which of these Cavs will I be writing a farewell to soon? ---> Dion Waiters and maybe Alonzo Gee

Steve Kyler
.@tooch25: What could the Cavs get for Waiters? A first round pick? ---> Not a good first round pick, and not likely a top 5 type pick
Updates 2/5

Steve Kyler
There is course is the annual Anderson Varejao watch. The Cavs have been reluctant to include him in trade talks, but sources around the situation say the massive dysfunction in Cleveland has them listening to a lot of things they normally wouldn’t.

Mannix on 92.3
Waiters still has value. Won't get a star player back but a solid player. Waiters doesn't have the value that a number 4 overall pick should at this point.

Active trade deadline. Notable names will probably be moved. Like a Pau Gasol. Josh Smith. But no stars being moved.

Waiters is above average as a player. Waiters has a bad reputation around the league. Can score, decent prospect, but teams won't give up a ton.

Cavs could trade Luol Deng, but only if they absolutely feel they can't resign him. Thinks Luol should be a building block for the Cavs. Great guy, great professional.

Deng knows this is the last big contract he will get. Likely goes to highest bidder.

Updates 2/6

From Yahoo
The Cavs had high hopes of making the playoffs this season, but things have gone sour in Cleveland. One player whom the Rockets could potentially look into is C.J. Miles. The 9-year veteran would fit as the swingman off the bench the Rockets are looking for, as Miles is averaging about 10 points while shooting 39 percent from the 3-point line.

Miles will undoubtedly be available, as reports indicate that the Cavs will look to make changes to their roster (most notably Dion Waiters). He has an expiring contract, which makes him an ideal target for Morey.

Jodie Valade
Gilbert said he will continue to push his team to be aggressive in pursuit of players at the Feb. 20 trade deadline – with acting general manager David Griffin leading the franchise.

Griffin on trading deadline: If anything, #Cavs will be buyers. "I don't see how you get better and win more games selling."

Alex Kennedy
For those asking, Luol Deng can be traded again by the Cavaliers before the Feb. 20 deadline. He just can't be packaged with another player.

A very intriguing trade rumors being talked about right now is the swap involving Deng and Portland Trail Blazers' small forward Nicolas Batum

Updates 2/13 Snapshots from Windy Podcast

On Trades

Griffin probably has the green light to improve the team given the 4 game win streak.

Expects the Cavs to make a move to acquire a player. They want veterans.

The vets they have aren't really leaders, at least here.

Lack of leadership in the locker room. More focused on leadership standpoint than a talent standpoint right now.

They need shooting They have had suspect shooting for 4 years.

Everyone needs rim protectors. Need guys who fit better as offensive options with Irving.

Teams looking for a big move are going to be offering expirings and draft picks.

Suns Okafor and picks, Bobcats have Gordon and picks.

There is some interest in Waiters. But you won't get value for him now.

Cavs have picks and expirings. But so do a lot of teams. Won't be trading picks for this year.

Going to be harder for them to compete in this market.

The Bullshit Whisperer

-- Interestingly, league executives re suddenly saying they think the Boston Celtics will end up keeping their current roster intact and make the majority of any moves after the season. Also, most feel the same about interim GM David Griffin and the Cavs. And most everyone seems to think the Lakers won't be able to reach a deal involving Pau Gasol.

Updates 2/17

http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/big-names-likely-stay-put-nbas-trade-deadline.html

Though the move for Jarrett Jack sounded good at the time and seemed to make sense for a team making a playoff run, it hasn’t worked in Cleveland. Would the guard short Nuggets take Jack and his two more guaranteed years as he prospered in their kind of game in Golden State? The Cavs could bring back Andre Miller to where he started in 1999 and end his banishment. Plus, his contract expires. The Nuggets add in someone like Jordan Hamilton. I still don’t get these Kenneth Faried rumors, by the way, as he could be the best player on their team.

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/10472347/brooklny-nets-cleveland-cavaliers-talk-jason-terry-jarrett-jack-deal

The Brooklyn Nets are interested in acquiring Cavaliers point guard Jarrett Jack and have had discussions about a potential trade with Cleveland involving Jason Terry, according to sources briefed on the talks.

The Nets (24-27) emerged from the All-Star break sitting 3½ games behind the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors and want to upgrade their bench and backcourt.

Jack, 30, is averaging just 8.5 points on 39.7 percent shooting in 25 minutes a game in his first season with the Cavs after a strong 2012-13 season in Golden State.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Nets, eager to add a proven ballhandler and backcourt scorer to their bench rotation, are willing to take on the two remaining guaranteed seasons worth in excess of $12 million left on Jack's contract despite the luxury-tax implications.

But it's believed that the Cavs, if they decided to go ahead with such a move, would try to find a third team to absorb Terry's contract. Terry, 36, has one season left on his deal after this one at $5.85 million and is averaging just 4.5 points on 36.2 percent shooting in 16 minutes per game.

Terry was acquired by Brooklyn last summer as part of the blockbuster deal that sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett from the Boston Celtics to the Nets.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates

I predict disappointment.

I just don't see much being made available in the form of trades. All of our young players are being devalued with the way they are playing right now. We will never get fair value for any of them. I just don't see a way that we can come out in a positive way. Either we stand Pat and continue losing, or we make some trade giving up assets for less than what they are worth.

Isn't much that is seemingly available in terms of bigger names. Omer Asik, Thad Young - those are probably the biggest names that are obviously available. Unless this Kyrie to SG thing is setting up for something ridiculous like Rondo.

Exactly. We won't be making any ground breaking trades, if we make any at all. Other teams will play hard ball with Grant, even for role players.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates

Evan Turner and Nerlen Noels for D.Waiters and Andy, and Bennett. That would be my proposal.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates

Mike Brown said:
We are going to have players around us that are selfless, that are accountable, and that have a blind trust in the group. Once we establish that culture, once we establish that foundation within our group, then we will be able to begin crafting our identity. And our identity will be one of a tough minded, physical, defensive first group that is smart in all aspects of the game.

Bynum didn't fit that description, we shipped him off for someone who does. We should expect more trades that move us in that direction. In another thread there was talk about moving Andy. I highly doubt that happens as he's one player who quite clearly fits the kind of player we want.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates

Asik for Thompson and Clark. Start Bennett, bring Varejao and Zeller off the bench. I love Tristan, but we have a logjam at the 4.

Irving/Jack
Waiters/Miles
Deng/Gee
Bennett/Varejao
Asik/Zeller

Brown will never bring Varejao off he bench behind Bennett, ever.

I wanted to ensure that Brown would still have the opportunity to hastily yank a young player for a small mistake.

As much as that trade would benefit us, there is no way Houston makes that deal. They're looking for a floor spacer at the PF spot. TT is just a shorter, less athletic, watered down version of Dwight Howard.

I realize that Thompson is not a great fir next to Dwight, but I see Jones as his long term partner, with Thompson being able to backup both positions. Swap Clark with Miles, they gain a shooter who can backup Harden and Parsons.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates

There are some good trade ideas and talks in here. But lets keep those for the other threads. I like the idea of a thread just of news, no commentary to make it easy to see whats going on in a pinch.
