I would be willing to part with Dion/TT/AV for Gasol but with their unprotected pick coming to us.

Lol, will never happen

If our goal is to get another first rounder this year I would target Phoenix. They have 4, and may be looking for more talent to win now, considering how well they have been playing.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates (post #2)

From the LA Times. Phoenix could have 4 picks in the first-round, but they might have as few as two (theirs and Pacers).

Sounds like Phoenix is having the same kinds of stalemate talks with the Lakers as the Cavs had with them:

The Phoenix Suns have stopped talks to acquire Pau Gasol because they feel the Lakers want too much for the veteran post player, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Phoenix could own four picks in the June draft, and the Lakers coveted one of the more valuable two -- the pick the Suns could potentially get from Minnesota or the one they might receive from Washington.

Both of those picks are protected and will revert back to Washington and Minnesota if they stumble. The Wizards' pick is top-12 protected, so the Suns technically own it at this point (17th overall before Tuesday’s games), while the Timberwolves’ pick is top-13 protected, meaning Minnesota holds it right now (12th overall before Tuesday).

Phoenix also has its own pick (22nd overall as of Tuesday afternoon) and Indiana's pick (currently 30th) in the draft, which is considered one of the best in years.

The talks could, of course, resume before the Feb. 20 trade deadline but the Lakers were reluctant to deal Gasol without receiving what they felt was adequate compensation. To make a trade with Phoenix work, the Lakers would have to take back the expiring contract of veteran center Emeka Okafor, who has not played this season because of a neck injury.

.

Makes you wander if the T'Wolves would do something drastic to ensure they keep their own pick for this draft? It is the T'Wolves anyway?

Would a Waiters/Monroe deal work? Would it be worth throwing TT in to make it work?

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates (post #2)

We went into this season trying to win. At this point we are so far down I think it would be absolutely silly to continue to do so. When you are this close to the glory land of a top 5 pick you suck it up and lose for one more year.

Look, I get that the season probably isn't salvageable at this point. But let's not do this again. Where we fool ourselves for the umpteenth time into thinking that yes, this year, this will be the last time. One last time. When you've got a group of losers like this, that you've trained to only know how to lose, there's no telling how many more years of this there will be.

Cleveland: The Cavaliers are open for business. The two names mentioned most around the league are second year guard Dion Waiters and veteran forward Alonzo Gee. Waiters and lead guard Kyrie Irving has not meshed well together and the Cavs seem to be accepting that moving Waiters has to happen. The Cavs could hold the line if the offer don’t improve and try and move Waiters around the draft or in free agency, but if they can make a move that returns a good asset they seem open to it. Gee has fallen out of the rotation since the arrival of Luol Deng and his contract in essence being an ending deal as the final year is not guaranteed. He seems like he’ll be tossed in to clear out the log jam and to try and up the overall value of a deal to return a better veteran as part of a bigger deal. There is course is the annual Anderson Varejao watch. The Cavs have been reluctant to include him in trade talks, but sources around the situation say the massive dysfunction in Cleveland has them listening to a lot of things they normally wouldn’t. The Cavs look like they are sellers, the question is do they get a deal in at the deadline or does business get pushed off to the draft. Current management may not survive a non-playoff berth, so there is at least some perceived urgency to get something done in Cleveland.

Scared. This doesn't feel right.

Are we gonna let a guy who may not be here make the trades and then still get rid of him?

Whose vision is this?

What a mess.

I don't get why people are so worried about this. Ultimately, Gilbert still has to sign off on any potential trades. If he thinks a trade is a bad deal for us or a panic trade by Grant, he has the power to nix it.

Yeah...people who complain about these things don't really know how front offices actually work.
ALL trade scenarios have to be approved and signed off by the owner before they happen.
If Gilbert personally doesn't think a trade isn't in the best interest of the team, it won't happen.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates (post #2)

Why would you let a guy you might fire in the summer make trade decisions with our last 3 years of roster acquisitions, when it's not his vision or coach that we're going to use to build the team?

If Grant is allowed to make big trades, I guess he's not going anywhere this summer.

Re: Trade Deadline 2014: News and Updates (post #2)

Yes, trades ultimately need to be approved by the owner. But that doesn't necessarily make me feel that great. Gilbert was dumb enough to let Grant convince him that Brown should be re-hired, and/or Gilbert was dumb enough to want Brown re-hired all on his own. It's also been rumored that Gilbert pushed hardest for at least a couple of the off-season moves (e.g., Bynum).

That's dumb logic. Grant, right now, is the GM. Who the hell else is going to be making trades for the Cavs? Until Grant is fired, he will continue to be in charge of personnel moves.

Regardless, you can't neuter your GM mid-season. It would be totally pointless. What if a great trade opportunity comes along? Who else is going to make it happen?
