Trade Deadline - Feb 8 at 3:00 EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If Wade wanted out I strongly suspect he thinks he is done = not able to play until finals. Cavs probably knew that also...

He’s looked terrible the last 2 months. He looked good earlier in the year when he his legs under him but he fell off a cliff. Couldn’t finish around the rim. Took too many long 2s.

Still probably our best defender tho.

The rest of the year is going to be fun and hopefully these guys gel.

That said, I can't help but think about how this trade impacts the future. Obviously, the big question is, "does it move the needle and convince LeBron to stay?".

However, these trades are particularly intriguing when I look at the future salaries we took on (particularly Hill $18-20m per through 2020 and Clarkson $13m per through 2020).

For next year ('18-'19), let's make a few assumptions that probably go hand-in-hand: a.) the "new" team clicks and works works well together, and b.) LeBron chooses to stay in CLE (yipee!). Looking at the roster, we'd have:
  • LeBron signs a max deal (assume $35m)
  • Hood needs to be resigned. I'm going to assume a JR-type contact of $15m per. Yes, this could be debated....
  • We have the Brooklyn pick (assume $4m)
  • We have a MLE (assume $5m per year)
  • We have 2 vet min slots to fill (assume $2m each)
Total payroll sums in the range of $165+ million. Luxury tax on that is, by my calculation, somewhere in the $195 million range (HOLY SHIT!). Note: please someone check my math. I don't care how much money Dan has, he's not paying $360 million in salaries+tax.

With this in mind, I have to imagine the Cavs are going to need to be active to keep the roster affordable. In my mind, we would need to be looking at trading some combination of JR, Thompson, Clarkson, Hill, and picks for cheaper/younger talent. The problem is, as evidenced by the trade market yesterday, there isn't a demand for overpriced role players.

The good part is, we have the rest of this year/playoffs to see who fits and who is expendable.

Something to chew on over the next several months while were watching this team, hopefully, make another strong run.

I'd love to know if LeBron, being happy with the trades, is also ok with the fact the Cavs could still very well not be a legit contender and if he's content with that? Lebrons all about rings and is also all about maximizing himself while still playing at a high level. Unless something magical happens this season and postseason, Boston may still be a better team. And even if we make it to the Finals, we are asking some young inexperienced players to play major roles against the Warriors.

I love the moves we made. Had to be done. No major players that could make an immediate difference were available. Kept that Brooklyn pick and I for one want to keep it unless Lillard, Davis, etc are available.

Wed the Cavs were not a legit contender. Now it is unknown. I prefer the unknown with upside and assets to improve.

Does anyone know what it might have TAKEN to get DJ?

Do we get DJ without giving up the Nets pick?

Do we get DJ for something resembling JR + TT + our first-rounder?

It sounded like they wanted the Nets pick, otherwise why take on the salary of JR/TT just for our 1st round pick. I think the only way we would have got him for our 1st, is to have all expiring contracts.

But salary matters to other teams and so this is one of criterias that dictate your value and asking price. I don't give a shit Clarkson is paid 12.5 a year, I really don't because we are in cap hell.. but that doesn't mean it didn't mean the world to Magic to get rid of him or it made teams that do have cap space not want to throw anything at him just to maintain flexbility for 2018 and 2019 FA crop.

I think what you are buying in to is the overstated narrative coming out of LA, which is "we suck but now we could get two good players!". Or is your opinion is that two young rotational players were not worth two expiring pieces and a pick?

Does the cap space have value to LA? I mean sure. But enough value to just give two young players away who have proven they can play in the NBA? It’s just a stretch to me. Especially in Nance's case.

I think they more so value cap space as a selling point to a fanbase that is growing rather impatient.....vs. viewing it as "meaning the world" to Magic.....and for a 1st round pick they were willing to ship the Cavs two players that are younger and more useful than the ones they were giving up.

I thought it was pretty fair value when you look at the youth and skillsets of the two players. If you want to argue the Cavs slightly overpaid or did overpay, fine.....but that's the reality of being a buyer at the deadline in any sport....especially when you are getting back younger talent.

We tried to get Dinwiddie with the Cavs 1st before the LA trade apparently. Brooklyn turned it down. From Lowe podcast.

Cavs were trying to get that BKN pick to #1 by taking away their best player

Bill Simmons does know NBA stuff well, but I think he's whistling past the graveyard (fooling himself) on our trade moves.

No matter how much he knows, he's still a Celtics fan in the end.

And a Celtics fan who may be watching his Finals aspirations fade away in the last 24 hours or so.

How many suiting up tonight? 10? No Love, no Hood Hill, Clarkson or Nance. Sweet Jeebus.

I saw somewhere that the Cavs sent their medical team to Atlanta hoping to clear our new players .

So, we are looking at:
- Tristan Thompson
- LeBron James
- J.R. Smith
- Ante Zizic
- Jose Calderon
- Jeff Green
- Kyle Korver
- Cedi Osman
- London Perrantes
- John Holland

CORRECT?

I would start Calderon-Korver-Bron-Green-Thompson, and
bring Perrantes-JR-Cedi-Zizic of the bench.

Though I doubt that's how it will happen.

Earlier today, the full injury report listed John Holland as “out” .....and it still does per ESPN.
