With Melo's trade kicker the Cavs would wind up paying him $30 mill, which would mean they'd have to trade Love and others just to get back Melo. No chance in hell. They'd need to get other young players or a 1st or two in return for it to make any sense at all.
Melo can waive up to 100% of the trade kicker necessary to make any deal work.
Cavs only need to send out $19-20M in salaries to make any deal for Melo work so long as he's willing to waive the kicker; which, I don't think he would decline since not waiving the kicker is equivalent to not waiving the no-trade clause.
So with that said, a deal centered around Frye/Shump/RJ works... Knicks can then buyout Frye and RJ and send Shump off to a third team for free (i.e., a team under the cap, getting nothing of value back). Saves them an enormous amount of money; very likely in the range of $30M+ ...
