Everyday I get on here and my DM’s are flooded with people asking about Pistol Pete.

“Pipster, how good was Pistol Pete in 77”? - Carlos_In_Parma

“Hey Pip, who are some of the guys in the college ranks today that remind you of Pistol Pete”? -Amherstcavsfan

“Pip, were you Pistol PIP Pete on the 97-98 Armco Heating & Cooling Hornets”? -PepperPikePistolPeteFan03

It’s hard to keep up with all the inquiries. But I found a little video of Pete talking about your opponents eating air if you execute this pass….So this should give you some idea of just how damn good he was…

Pete was an all time great, no doubt. Averaged 40 something a game at LSU, an offensive machine. He'd be even better in this age of NBA basketball. Guy lived and breathed hoops and was coached by his dad in college.

My 8th grade gym teacher was infatuated with Pistol Pete. Had a story where he went to one of his basketball camps and Pete made like 40 jumpers in a row while dispensing shooting tips. Even had the same stache and fashion sense as Pete does in that video, which 25 years on, explains alot. He looked like Uncle Rico. Now that I think about it, he should have concerned me more. Anyway, Pistol Pete was incredible, he was the first Steph Curry.

It’s never too late to be concerned.

The statute of limitations have probably run on his fashion crimes, but a couple online searches + arrested might turn up some validating information.

I love old school basketball

“And what happens? The ball goes on the other side! It’s amazing!”

Tragic there was no three point line when he played. Would have immediately transformed him from one of the least efficient to one of the most efficient volume scorers ever

Mostly true, but in his final season he put up 15 3PA and made 10. The NBA refused to accept the ABA rule in part because Red Auerbach strongly opposed it. Then he drafted Larry Bird and changed his mind. Yet another reason to hate Auerbach and the Celtics.

Wasn't hr like a worse James harden. All flash and no substance. Averaging 40 ppg means nothing if you can get above 45 wins

You are comparing apples and oranges
Pete’s career scoring avg was 24.5
James’ is 25.
Pete’s FG% was 44.4/James’ career is 43.1
Over his career Pete averaged 5.6 assists
James has averaged 6 assists game. you can hardly say he’s worst than James Harden. If you ever seen Pete play (which I have) Harden’s ball handling skills are nowhere close to Pete’s. The stat James out does Pete in is FT % 89-82
As far as wins go Pete’s only been to 6 playoff appearances compared to James’ 12. Neither of them are defensive stoppers but having the opportunity to see both play…Pete was more of a defender than James is.

Maravich was def hurt by the lack of a 3pt line but his metrics were awful. Harden we know can be the engine of a top 5 offense and top 5 team. Maravich empirically was incapable of that. It's not just boxscore numbers that matter

Maravich in his days didn’t have to be the top engine of his team because he had players like Lou Hudson to help carry the load….sorta like Harden was when he played with Westbrook and Durant.

And that didn't help him lead his team anywhere beyond the first few playoff rounds

Pete actually went to one EC finals with the Celtics. James has only been to ONE Finals.
And three of the four trips James went to the WCF was twice with Westbrook and Durant in OKC and once with Westbrook in Houston. He had plenty of superstar help. But like Pete… NO RING!
