What does it takes to get Darren Collison and Chris Bosh and some Pistons like Prince

Re: What does it takes to get Darren Collison and Chris Bosh and some Pistons like Pr

Is acquiring a guy who plays the same position as LBJ and on the wrong side of 30 really the type of deal that would induce him to re-sign?

Sorry, but this isn't NBA 2K. I could care less what so-called "position" a guy plays. I'm much more concerned with a players skillset.

The Lakers are starting 6-6 Kobe Bryant next to 6-6 Ron Artest and the Celtics are starting 6-5 Ray Allen next to 6-6 Paul Pierce.

If the Cavs started Prince and LeBron next to each other, they'd give teams fits with their length and have no problem guarding 2's and switching and trapping on the pick and roll.

You're right though. Prince and Hamilton are too old to win a title. They're much older than Pierce, Allen, Garnett, Sheed, Artest, Kobe, Fisher, Odom, and Gasol. Oh that's right, they're not.

Would you mind giving me a hint about the last "young" team to win a title? I'm still looking for one.;)

Both these guys are proven winners with rings on their fingers, and maybe most importantly are players that will play the roles they are asked to. I'm not a fool, Rip's contract is a burden and Prince had some injury issues last year - although it needs to be mentioned he played all 82 for 6 full seasons before last, so claims he is "injury-prone" are without merit.

I'm not saying it's a perfect deal, and it's surely not a slam dunk giveaway trade like Mo, Shaq, or Jamison. But I'll take Rip and Tayshaun over guys like Mo, Jamison, and Parker any day of the week - especially after seeing those guys play in the Playoffs the last 2 seasons.

Probably not, but Delonte's contract is basically a $9M giveaway to any team currently over the cap. That is a lot of instant money if you're a cash-strapped franchise, making it a pretty significant asset for a trade. In essence, if you add it to the $3M you're normally permitted to pay for a draft pick, it would let the Cavs pay a team $12M for a pick. That could be a very nice asset to either use, or trade with some other pieces/parts for a significant acquisition. A top 10 pick and JJ Hickson isn't a bad package.

I'm not understanding the $9 million figure here, unless you're including a luxury tax savings. Delonte's deal is for $4.6 and $500K is guaranteed, it's possible the Cavs would pay that portion of West's salary in a deal. I don't remember saying it's a not an asset.

Your math here doesn't add up. I apologize if I am missing something.

I won't. Prince is vastly overrated and Rip has rapidly declined the past 3 years. The only way I consider taking Rip's terrible contract off their hands is if they throw in the number 7.

I think Tayshaun Prince is a little fragile. His back has given him problems the past couple seasons as I recall, so there is an adherent risk as far as that is concerned. IF healthy, I think Prince is a more viable athletic wing player TODAY than Parker or Moon have ever been at any point in their respective careers. One with championship experience, no less.

Much thanks to Duncan for saving an otherwise painful thread to read. ;)

Prince was injured last year, but the previous 6 seasons he did play all 82 games in every one - not to mention Pistons Playoff games.

It's far from a perfect deal, but if the Pistons offered me Rip and Prince for Mo and Jamison, I wouldn't hesitate. Heck if they offered me that for Jamison and a collection of salary dump expirings, I'd likely take that too. Then look for a big man with the MLE.

No freaking way I do that. You want to trade for two 30+ year-olds that are past their primes? We can get way better value, and if not I'd keep Mo and Antawn.

On a side note, nice to see that the OP is finally banned from this site.

I am including the luxury tax aspect. The Cavs would be permitted to sent along cash, so essentially, the team who gets Delonte could cut him and, if they were over the tax, it would save double his salary. Taking the non-guaranteed portion into account, plus the cash, I'm guessing the actual savings could be almost $9M. It all depends how far they are into the tax, obviously, but the potential for savings of that magnitude is there.

I don't have an objection to getting Rip and Prince for essentially nothing, but I have a huge objection to accomplishing that by using up our expirings. Do you really think that the acquisition of the over 30 Rip and Prince would induce LBJ to sign a new deal with the Cavs? Yes, Boston did it with old guys, but Rip and Prince aren't what Garnett and Allen were three years ago, either. And if LBJ didn't re-sign, we'd have just locked ourselves onto an even worse treadmill. They are nice complementary pieces IF we managed also to acquire a significant talent that would get LBJ's attention. But that's not going to happen.

We have to use whatever assets we have, especially the expirings, to help acquire either 1) a significant talent that will keep LBJ in Cleveland, or 2) young talent that will have value even if LBJ leaves. A deal centered around Rip and Prince doesn't meet either critieria. Oh, and I've never played NBA2k or any other basketball video game. I'm just going off what I see, and what I'm guessing about LBJ's intentions.
