What the rebuild SHOULD look like..

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Nice ideas Smooth, interested to see the revisions as time progresses.

Something that has changed now that LeQuit is gone, teams may be more willing to deal with us. Specifically the ones that were trying to get him and the ones we were competing against for titles.

personally i love the idea of andy for harden/mullens mainly because of harden..... then we can find a way too use our trade exception for the like of posey/collison and Al Jerfferson that gives you a nice young core too build around of collison/harden/jj/al jerfferson plus we would still have delonte and other expirings too continue too try too bring in young talent.

I would like to see us get Iguodala and Jefferson...then next year work hard on trying convince NO to trade us Paul and Okafor.

A backcourt of Paul and Iggy, to me, would be sick. That is everything you could ever want out of your guard. Defense, scoring, passing, rebounds...everything!

The big man tandem of Jefferson and Okafor is great too. Neither are super big men, but they compliment each other perfectly. Okafor is great defensively but his offensive is limited, Jefferson's offensive is nice, but he just lacks certain tools to be anything but adequate on defense.

Since we are all dreaming here, if you can convince these 4 to be on the roster...spend every other thing you have remaining to try and convince Melo to come here and be our 3.

Pg - Paul
Sg - Iggy
Sf - Melo
Pf - Al
C - Okafor

The evil empire couldn't handle that shit! Lebron would jack up dumb threes instead of drivng in side against Iggy and Melo have to get around Okafor. Wade's body would break down at an accelerated rate and he would collapse by half time. Bosh is just soft...I'm not worried about him in general.

Is there no longer a salary cap?

5. Enes Kanter
Looking for the next Ricky Rubio? Kanter may be even more NBA-ready than Rubio was at this point. At 6-10 and 250 pounds, Kanter’s big frame is what gives him an advantage. For his age, he knows how to control his body like no other 18-year old. Part of the reason is that he’s been the same size for three years now. Kanter has developed his skills in Europe from the age of 15. One unique characteristic about him is how he did not accept any money while he played in Europe because he did not want to hinder with his NCAA eligibility, as he’ll be playing at Kentucky this Fall. If he can keep that kind of attitude in the League, he’s bound for success.

4. Jan Vesely
He may be European, but Vesely does not fit the mold of a prototypical European prospect. Normally, Europeans come over to the United States with great fundamentals. While Vesely has decent fundamentals, he’s no Dirk Nowitzki. Athletically, Vesely is a specimen. He has great mobility for a 6-11 player. He seems to be in the mold of a Lamar Odom since he has the ability to play every position on the court. Had he stayed in the Draft this year, there would have been a chance he could have cracked the Top 5. Now imagine how high he could go next year.

3. Josh Selby
After taking home the gold for the Powerade JamFest, Josh Selby decided to head to Kansas. Although he did not choose to go to Kentucky, Selby has many similarities to Derrick Rose and John Wall at this stage. He is an explosive 6-3 guard, will be the main focus on his team, and has inconsistencies with his jump shot. Another issue is that he is not a point guard yet. Kansas may have been the right choice considering they have dealt with this type of player before. Kirk Hinrich and Mario Chalmers were not pure point guards, but they found roles in the NBA. Selby has the tools of an elite point guard; he just needs the experience to develop into one.

2. Perry Jones
Imagine Tracy McGrady’s game in a power forward’s body. That sounds like a player that would only be made in a video game, right? Jones tore up the AAU circuit last summer and made sure everyone noticed. Clearly, Jones has the most upside in this crop. While Jones took over the AAU circuit last summer, some scouts began to wonder why he hadn’t been highly touted before. After watching him more of him, scouts realized that he does not always play like a killer. There were games in which he would barely even make it onto the box score. His NBA-ready body and uncanny coordination would be nearly impossible for any Lottery team to pass up on.

1. Harrison Barnes
What separates Kobe Bryant from the rest of his competition is how he competes. He is always mentally prepared for any task that he has to take on. However, he did not always have the mental aspect of the game mastered. This is why scouts are raving about Harrison Barnes. Barnes is a smart kid who already understands what it takes to get to the top. During the McDonald’s All-American Game, Barnes seemed to be miles ahead of his classmates. His offensive arsenal is highly advanced for his age. If Barnes can stay humble and continue to work hard, he could make wings ........, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant feel like old men once he gets to the League.

Tank for a top 5 pick... the scouting reports sound promising.... I don't usually get to into college hoops(Except March Madness)... but this year may be different....

Waive Delonte West - the Cavs could use him in a deal but would be better off just waiving him and gaining the extra cap space themselves...

What about Delonte to Memphis for Hasheem Thabeet? This would save Memphis some money and I believe that Marc Gasol is a better fit for them long-term at center anyways. Plus, this deal will help the cheap owners in Memphis (although they did re-sign Gay for big $$$) be able to re-sign Gasol long-term.

No way they give up on the 2nd pick after 1 year. That would be a PR disaster for Memphis.

I've thought about Smooth's original trade ideas for a couple of days, and even though I'm not keen on Brandon Rush or Thad Young, this is the sort of approach we should be considering...

Young is a tweener forward, but he is still only 22, still young enough to get better, and if you compare him and his contract with Marvin Williams, I'll take Young. More to the point, he may well be available. Give him a year as the starter at SF and if he doesn't work out, let him walk.

That said, maybe Varejao has a bit more value...If I am a contender, I'd love to add Andy Varejao. He will help a good team get better. But I can't believe that James Harden is realistic.

The Denver idea is really genius. Denver needs to do something to address their front court situation if they have any hope of competing next year. They have no front court depth, and as you say if they traded us K-Mart, they could get him back after we buy him out. Lawson would be a high price to pay. But I think looking for a young true point guard should be a goal -- Kyle Lowry, Mike Conley, Darren Collison have all been mentioned. Also Jeff Teague, though he is more of a combo guard.

As I said, I am not a big fan of Rush either, but for the chance at Indy's pick, if that trade is available, I absolutely jump at it. Also gives you a usable center in Foster, which you desperately need, especially if you trade AV.

Smooth's original idea was based on the premise the Cavs were building cap space. That now seems not to be the plan, so I would try to turn Delonte West into an asset. Trade him for a marginally bad contract and an asset (future pick)...We need to use the West contract to get some sort of asset.

Then, keep the TPE till a better opportunity to use it comes along. Maybe at the trade deadline, maybe next off-season. Wait till next year, and you haven't endangered your chances of landing a high draft pick. Of course, you don't necessarily have to use the entire $14.5M.

The range of options the Cavs have now is really staggering, unlike the past when everything was predicated on finding players who complemented a certain superstar. It's really a blank slate now.

Actually the TPE is only good for 1 year, so we cant wait too long to use it.

I think our best option is to use what assets we have now to acquire another potential lottery pick, to go with the one we could potentially play into, and trade for a young talented center prospect.

Centers are so tough to come by (talented true centers anyway), so adding one this year, and having him play next to JJ to gain more experience could be great for our future.

We should look into obtaining a great scorer like Mayo, Iggy, etc...and a young point guard prospect as well this season, but I'm not sure what we would have to give up for one of them.

Setting up a foundation of those 3 types of players this year to go along with JJ, and 1-2 potential top 5 picks could put us back in contention in 2 years, with a bright future to boast. No more of this "win now with 34 yr old vets with gigantic contracts" because it becomes a, win this year or else, situation.

I know a lot of people said they wouldnt do an Emeka Okafor and Collison deal but what about an Emeka, Collison and their 1st round pick next draft for a player or 2 and our TPE? N.O. might be in the lottery again so their pick could land us a very talented player.

Is New Orleans still shopping collison with emeka? I haven't seen this idea out there in about a month except on this forum.

Im not sure.

Another idea i was thinking of is to build our own big three. We could have a head start in building it with JJ if he can be a very good player. I believe it was RandolphKeys who said JJ could turn into a more explosive version of David West and I think that would be great. The next step is to use our trade assets to get a young player that can be here for the long haul and be very good. The 1st player that comes to mind is Darren Collison. There is really no telling how available he is but if they really want to shed salary(ex: Okafor. everybodies favorite) we could use our trade exception to get him and maybe in the process get N.O's 1st round pick next draft. I think it could be possible especially if they really want to get rid of Okafor. Have JJ mature as a payer this next season and show a lot of promise and get a young player such as a Collison who has showed to be very good so far and possibly get a high lotto pick in the next draft and we could have the rebuilding process start as early as next season.

This league is all about building a big 3. There is really no more Batman and Robin or 1 man show. For us to compete in the future the best thing for us to do, starting now is to build our big 3 and the easiest thing for us to do is to do it through the draft. I just keep thinking about a Harrison Barnes, JJ Hickson and Darren Collison big 3. Im keeping my hopes up that we can have a respectable record next season and get very lucky and draft Harrison Barnes in the next draft. Wishful thinking.

I'd be more interested in Speights from Philly than Thad Young. Not sure if he'd be available, but maybe if they took Lou Williams as well.

The pacers deal I like as well, but doubtful Indy will give a 1st round pick that can be used in the next 3-5 years. They're still going to be bad for a little while.

If I'm the cavs I'm looking for guys on their rookie contracts that might be available.

Speights, Rush, Collison all fit the bill. Even somebody like Wayne Ellington might not be bad or even Martell Webster.

Wow! Amazing post Smooth. I am a huge fan of Thaddeus Young so I would love for him to fill the SF spot. Your plan is very realistic and is something near what the team should potentially try to do. There are other options that are mentioned in this thread such has Harden at SG or Thabeet at C, but this is basically the 'rough draft' of a plan we can actually put in place. As a fan, I'd be excited because the Cavs would be majorly involved in trade talk, we'd have a roster stock full of young talent, and we'd still have good picks for the next two years. That team would be damn good after a few seasons. E-mail that plan to Dan Gilbert.

Here goes some ideas i thought of since we have the tpe...

Horents:
TPE (14.2m)

Cavs:
Peja Stojakovic (14.2m)

2nd part of the trade

Hornets:
Sebastian Telfair
Future 1st round pick

Cavs:
Darren Collison

This saves the Hornets a shit load of money upfront, and for the Cavs Peja expires after this season so we wouldn't have to take on a long term deal. And we get our pg for the furture.

Another trade to get rid of Mo, which i'm basing off of previous rumors.

Kings:
Mo Williams

Cavs:
Omar Casspi
2nd round pick

The Kings are far enough under the cap to take on Mo's contract.

Ehh...not liking the Peja trade...but I suppose since this is a rebuilding stage and Peja is gone after this season...hell, why not. We'd have a veteran power forward...even better, our future point guard in Darren Collison.
