Just the other day I told my daughter the story of the time I didn't get to go see The Bee Gees.
I was born in 1963 and grew up on The Bee Gees. They were my favorite group before they took over the world with Saturday night fever. After that they recorded Spirts having flown and went on tour in 1979. I went with my friend to get tickets back in the day when you had to go to the record store and buy tickets through Ticketron. I'm not even sure how that worked, I think each store must have had some allotment of tickets.
I went with my best friend Chris. He had the money for the tickets. On the way to the record store he stopped at a clothes store to flirt with a girl from school who worked there. He flirted his way into spending all of his money on clothes. I said Chris, did you just flirt away our money for Bee Gees tickets. He said it's probably sold out anyway. We went, they still had tickets, we went back to get a refund, they only gave store credit. We didn't get to go. Seemed like everyone else at school went but us.
My dad said "don't worry, you can see them next year". By the next year, The Bee Gees were caught up in the strange disco backlash, which never made any sense because The Bee Gees weren't really disco and dance music was still popular. People missed out on some great Bee Gees music after that.
They didn't tour again for 10 years, I had to drive 3 hours to see the closest stop. I only ever saw them one other time, when I went to NYC to see the Live By Request concert in 2001, which was their last live concert. I was near the lights on the second level on the side where Maurice was.
