Where’s my Barry Gibb fans at ?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's just a different kind of vocal power that can add emotion to songs. Prince was a master at that

I get it. I just don't like the sound of it. There's no resonance, and the dynamic range is usually pretty small. But obviously a lot of folks do like it.

Let me put it this way -- I think a falsetto that is used sparingly within a particular song can be okay. It's when all or most of an entire song is sung in falsetto that it just sounds nasally and annoying to me.

Jeff Buckley mastered mixing in falsetto with tenor. Sadly his career was incredibly short, but what there was of it, he nailed what you’re describing IMO.

@KI4MVP - You'll like this story:

Circa 2008, I was living in Raleigh with my GF (now wife) and had to get my wisdom teeth removed... I was around 25-26.

When I started to awake from the anesthesia and was still super drugged up, they were playing the song Tragedy on the radio and the nurses had to hold me down from getting up and dancing. When my GF (wife) picked me up, I was still singing it and doing crotch thrusts in the hallway of the dentist's office. She said the entire office was cracking up laughing at me.

When we got home, after a car ride of me aggressively squishing blood between my front teeth and staring at her, I laid down in the grass in our apartment complex (where dogs piss and shit) and started doing Grass (snow) angles while singing the hook from "Tragedy" in my best falsetto.

AKA... I really like the song "Tragedy" :chuckle:

Wow.

When I came to, I was demanding to get the hell out of the office. Once I got in the car, all I wanted was “a fucking snow cone and to get home so everyone can get the hell out of my face.”

Super aggro. Have been under anesthesia a couple times since, and did not have a reaction like that.

I just listened to RRJ coming home for the weekend, so I'm going to give Buckley's album a listen because you really sold it.

ETA: just listened to "So Real". Holy crap.

First thing I noticed was the music, which was just odd in the best way. Unusual and unexpected chord progressions, and then the vocals just amplified that. Just brilliantly unique, and I see exactly what you mean with the falsetto.

In a weird way, he reminds me of a darker, masculine version of Kate Bush because of the musical and vocal choices he makes that you just aren't used to hearing.

Definitely going to listen to the rest of the album over the weekend. Thanks for the heads-up.

General anesthesia for wisdom teeth removal?

I just had gas, local and a Walkman for music.

So I was conscious for the whole thing. Heard each of the four teeth being pulled (sounded like eating Cap’n Crunch) but one got hung up so he had to use the knife and I heard that too.

This is the Boomer Way. GA is for wimps.

Of course Greatest Generation used pliers and a shot of whiskey.

I can’t claim to be too tough though because Saturday Night Fever came out my freshman year at Rubber City College and we were all disco dancers. People just kept playing Side One. Constantly.

I often wondered if “More Than A Woman” was really a transgender song.

Plus we had the Village People.

It was a confusing time.

Did NOT think of a Kate Bush comparison. I love it.

It’s not the same sound, but it’s the way it gets under your skin because every sound seems to be in the right place but somehow not at all what you’re anticipating.

Did you think “ethereal” was the right word?

Can’t wait to hear what else you have to think!

At least you got gas.

I just had a local.

The sounds and pressure were not painful, but not pleasant.

I had to be told to stop gripping the arm rests so tight.

No proper pain killers, just motrin.

Military medicine at its finest.

Wife was an Army brat. ‘nuff said.

From what I’ve read and seen online, Barry Gibb appears to be a very overwhelming lover.

guarantee Prince would have demanded no anesthesia. He’d want to get the full experience. All the pain, the sounds, and smells. He’d have considered it erotic.
