Who would YOU draft?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

A bunch of draft-related questions. Sorry it's confusing.

The way I see it:

Porter - Not an All-Star
Len - Not an All-Star

Why does everyone assume that getting both those players would be a home run? And why is that even a goal?

Len has all-star talent though. That is the roll of the dice.

Porter = Prince/Granger Might not be an all-star but he's the type of player that we need on this team. He's the perfect role player. He's a capable scorer able to carry a load when needed but best when a #3 or #4 option, can create his own shot or can catch and shoot, rebounds well, able to defend multiple positions, just all around a great player. Not every player needs to be an all-star, sometimes you need a guy that just makes everything work for your team. Porter is that guy.

Len = Big Z. Big Z was also a 2 time all-star. For his career, with having to battle injuries, he averaged 17.2 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 2.1 bpg, .476 FG%, 1.5 apg. During his prime he averaged around 18 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 2.3 bpg,`1.8 apg, ~.486 FG%. Able to knock down a midrange jumper in pick and pop situations.

What we need are people that fit our scheme. This year doesn't look to have a lot of all-star quality players, but they have high end players that can be high end starters that are just below all-star quality with a few all-star games tossed in. But really with Irving, Waiters, and an emerging Thompson, how many other players on the team will end up making all-star games unless we end up with a Wiggins/Parker or LeBron back in Cleveland?

Well it would be a home run because they're probably 2 of the top 5 players in this draft. You may be right about them not being all-stars, I just don't think there are many people who will be better than them.

Porter and Len don't have to have much talent to be all stars. Joakim Noah and Brook Lopez, Paul George and Luol Deng were all stars. Guys that clearly aren't franchise players. The center and small forward positions are pretty weak talent wise. I think Porter has the potential to be among the best small forwards, certainly higher than deng and george, and Len can beat out the scrubs at center.

Even though this draft seriously lacks star power, I really like our options with our own pick, so far looks like we have:

The high risk high reward pick: Nerlens Noel (fills a difficult hole to fill, highest upside in the draft)

The safest pick: Otto Porter (complete player, fills a huge need, fits the roster like a glove, watch out once he gets a little stronger)

The question mark pick: Alex Len (does he have the motor/mental makeup/physicality? will he impress in workouts?)

The unlikely pick: Shabazz Muhammad (pure scorer, is he willing become a better all-around player? how does he fit with Waiters/Irving personnality-wise?)

The wild card pick: Victor Oladipo (efficient on offense, relentless on defense... high character guy; no doubt Grant will love him)

Who else do you think could end up being Grant's WTF pick?

I've been looking around the mock NBA draft websites, and here's a list of what the 3 sites have us taking right now (although some sites haven't added in team needs)..

NBAdraft.net

#3 - Otto Porter
#17 - Rudy Gobert
#32 - Adreian Payne
#33 - Sergey Karasev

MyNBAdraft.com

#4 - Otto Porter
#18 - Mitch McGary
#32 - Lucas Nogueira
#34 - Lorenzo Brown

DraftExpress

#4 - Anthony Bennett
#17 - Gorgui Dieng
#32 - Russ Smith
#34 - Lorenzo Brown

(Some draft positions are different as they haven't updated the standings within the last couple days)

Which mock do you like best?

I'm part of the majority that doesn't see us bringing in 4 rookies, but all of these mocks have an intriguing look to them. However, I really like NBADraft.net's version. Two wings and two bigs could really help fill the two biggest voids on the Cavs. Gobert would be a project but with a 7'9" wingspan he could be a solid defensive presence, and Porter's skills seem to compliment Dion/Kyrie fairly well.

Now, since this thread is "Who would YOU draft?" I'll create my ideal scenario as well.

As previously stated, I just don't see us bringing in 4 guys. At MOST, 3, but even that's doubtful. My prediction is that we move our two second round picks to slide into the end of the 1st (some teams picking 25-30 would do this trade as 2nd round pick contracts aren't fully guaranteed and the talent from 20-35 isn't a huge gap).. Hypothetically speaking, I'll say we trade to San Antonio at 28.

#3 - Otto Porter
#17 - Steven Adams
#28 - Deshaun Thomas

Adams is obviously a project but pairing him along side Varejao could do wonders for him. If he has a good work ethic and takes notice of Varejao's hustle, Adams definitely has potential to be a solid big in the league. Thomas can provide scoring off the bench and a break for Porter/Gee.

I think you need to go with Noel or Len at the first pick. True centers just don't become available very often, and even when they do, they are extremely expensive. Bynum has missed huge amounts of time due to his knees and will still probably get a near-max deal from somewhere. Looking at the next few free agent classes there are plenty of SF available that are extremely similar to Porter, so I think you need to place a premium on the C position and draft accordingly, mainly because the teams around the league have made it the standard through the contracts they've given out.

With the second pick I'd like to possibly trade up a couple of slots with one of our seconds to take Isiah Austin as a developmental big. If they can't swing that I would look at either GR3 or Karasev as a developmental wing.

I don't think we'll bring in more than two rookies to camp next year, but I think this might be a good time in the rebuild to start acquiring some talented European prospects that we can bring over in 2-3 years when we have a more complete team and just need some talented role players on rookie deals or trade chips in order to fill out the rest of the roster.

Completely unrelated to draft but say we do go Porter, you think we'd take a flyer on Bynum?

No. Can we stop with this OKC stuff? They aren't trading down in the draft, they are trying to contend for a Championship and need good players, not a late 1st and two 2nd round draft picks. They will most likely try to move up to get a player they want.

So why would drafting a rookie help them in a championship? I could easily see a situation where OKC decides to roll the dice on Andy's health and be willing to take Andy and a 2nd for Perkins, who gives them nothing, and their #10 pick. Their biggest weakness right now is a big man, that fixes that problem.

I'm just looking at the Ford top 30. If we don't pick 1, I wonder if this Croatia guy named Dario Saric could be in play for our pick. Especially when private workouts happen. Seems like the type of guy that could have a meteoric rise.

No chance. He's basically been billed in Europe as a lazy piece of shit that would rather party than be in the gym. He also has a massive entourage full of unstable people giving him horrible advice.....

Ford didn't really go in depth on stuff like that. I just noticed him at 12 on the new big board.
