Windy: Shaq close to being Cav (PG. 10 update)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Agree they're both terrible talent wise...but you can't compare Ben and Sasha to Shaq! It's not like the Suns think they're getting equal talent...it's the fact that they're cutting cost.

Everything I've heard / read so far this summer is that several teams are bleeding cash, so while our assets may not have talent, they save teams money and to many teams that's more important than talent this offseason.

We can obviously agree to disagree, it's just two differing opinions. But tell me...what is the point of rushing into this? Why does the deal need to be done TONIGHT or TOMORROW? Say Shaq is the best we can do for Pavs and Ben...why not let Phoenix sweat it out a while and face the prospect of paying shaq $20MM this year? Maybe we're able to swing a deal without Pavs included...maybe that allows us to flip him into ANOTHER piece.

We've obviously all got our own opinions, but I'm just curious why everyone wants to rush into the Shaq deal?

I agree we all have our own opinions.

Im almost positive Sasha will have to be included because of his contract. We dont have anyone else that were willing to give up for Shaq with a contract like Sasha's.

Im not sure were rushing the deal, I think its the Suns. They want to cut costs ASAP. It will give them more flexibility with signing a draft pick or two, keeping some FA's, and possibly giving Nash an extension. Cleveland happens to be suitors that want to add a championship piece.

The fact that is possibly happening on draft day makes me wonder if the 14th pick is involved. A swap of picks maybe?

if we get shaq, jason kidd is prolly going to sign here

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play... (Update, PG. 4)

EDIT: I started my response about fifteen minutes ago, and in that fifteen minutes, this thread had about 80 additional posts. So I'm responding to a question from about six pages ago, at this point.

Why can't a team with 0 dollars guaranteed aford 3 max contracts? I would like you to do the math for me and tell me why not. Actually they can keep Beasley and sign Wade, Bosh and Bron plus whoever to fill out the roster. You know people will take huge pay cuts to play with three superstars.

The answer lies in the mystery of salary cap holds. A team must have a roster of 12 players; therefore, if a team wants to sign three players to maximum level contracts, then a team's salary cap number is calculated first by including 9 salary cap holds at the minimum salary. As such, a team never has a salary cap number of $0.

Larry Coon calls this a "roster charge":

A roster charge if the team has fewer than 12 players (players under contract, free agents included in team salary, players given offer sheets, and first round draft picks). The roster charge is equal to the rookie minimum salary for each player below 12. The roster charge only applies during the offseason.

For 2009-2010, the NBA minimum salary is $457,588. Multiply that by nine, and the absolute minimum salary cap number that a team could have would be $4,118,292.

Now, in theory, you are probably correct - a team could probably sign three maximum contract free agents, at the 30% base salary for signing free agents. These three free agents would come to 90% of the salary cap. And since that $4,118,292 is likely to be less (just a little less) than 10% of the salary cap, it could probably done.

But it would mean not having any draft picks, and players under contracts overseas - anything. It's a theoretical possibility, but I would venture that it will never actually happen in reality.

I guess James will be going elsewhere for his stated goal of "multiple championships"

Okay, which team is better in James' eyes?

Mo
Childress
James
CV
Chandler

Bench - (Clark, Williams, or Brown), Boobie, Delonte, AV, Z, JJ, etc....

or

Mo
Delonte
James
CV
Shaq

Bench - Boobie, AV, Z, JJ, etc....

I am taking the first team EVERY time.

Just talked to Steven A. Smith on Twitter:
AMC31@stephenasmith Hey Steven A. any big Cavs trade rumors besides Shaq?

stephenasmith@AMC31 Not really. I think they're about to complete the Shaq deal. Phoenix didn't want Wallace; wanted Varejao, instead. They may get him.

Did'nt a 40 year old Kareem win a ring with Magic Johnson? Can Shaq do the same with Lebron? YES!

If Ferry wants to move drastically in the first round and if this Shaq trade would need to happen before the draft to set up another move, then maybe this is a possibility:

Shaq and #14 for Ben, Sasha, and future pick(s) in 2010 or 2011. Then trade #14 and # 30 for a top ten pick... perhaps adding a filler depending on how high the pick is.

Ferry then drafts a player who he feels will contribute right away. (Why else would Ferry want to trade up for a high draft pick?) Now we would improve in two areas with free agency still coming up.

EDIT: I wonder if this idea would qualify as trading first round picks in consecutive years, even though we would be acquiring one as well.

Steven A. Smith is full of shit. Were not trading AV, its not do able before the draft.Phoenix wants it done on draft day. Where his cheese puffs drugged?

stephenasmith@AMC31 Not really. I think they're about to complete the Shaq deal. Phoenix didn't want Wallace; wanted LeBron, instead. But New York may get him for Eddy Curry according to my sources. ESPN won't give me the proper budget to investigate. Doodlez out.

Give us the 14th along with Shaq and we'll talk.

Yeah, and not only did he have Magic Johnson on the team, he had the 1988 NBA Finals MVP - James Worthy. Please tell me who on our team has an chance of winning the Finals MVP besides LeBron? There's no one.
