Windy: Shaq close to being Cav (PG. 10 update)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Shaq is ok, but he is nothing special. He is a big name. I would rather trade Ben Wallace for Kaman and keep Sasha for another deal. Kaman isn't as good as Shaq but he is 10 years younger and he would be FAR better for the long-run.

Shaq is a HOF, and possible the greatest center ever

Say Bill Russel, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul Jabarr. :chuckles:

And I was joking, I see where you say possible...just having fun.

So you'd rather take a mediocre, oft injured big, who's salary totally screws us out of any possibility of picking up a top name FA next summer, rather than take a resurgent HOF'er who could leave us in good position for the summer of 2010?

Interesting.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Marc Stein said:
When he's done lording over the draft with his four first-round picks, Kahn is expected to target a young coach to take over his young team. That's one of the reasons ESPN's Mark Jackson has been widely billed as the favorite for the job...
This is the most important piece of news here. How great would it be to get Mark Jackson on to the sidelines and off of broadcasting? Hope it happens.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

The problem with Shaq is that it leaves us in the gutter come 2010. Even if we win, there's going to be talent leaving the team, and there's no promise of future wins here.

Also, it's impossible for the Cavs to get top talent in next years free agent hunt, unless we don't resign AV (or acquire any other long term pieces) this season. Deal with it.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

In the Top 5 Anyways:

Kareem
Chamberlain
Russell
O'Neal
Olajuwon

Hakeem is so underrated it isnt even funny. He was a sweet, sweet all around player. And i agree that shaq might be top 5, cant think of anyone besides the 4 you mentioned better than shaq except maybe Mel Turpin :chuckles:

We wont have any money to spend come 2010 anyways. You will see that 2010 free agency hasnt been ferry's plan all along after the summer is done. Reason why Ferry was getting expiring contracts was the flexibility it provides and the fact they are huge assets that gain value the closer you come to 2010. Same reason he puts partial guruntees in contracts like sasha. Its a trick he learned from SA, and all that trick did for SA this week is get them RJ.(and a free jar of vaseline)

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Just messing around on ESPN's trade checker for a 3rd team to get Shaq to Cleveland...

Cavs:
Send Wallace to Phoenix
Send Palovic and West to Memphis
Get Shaq from Phoenix
Get Gay from Memphis

Phoenix:
Send Shaq to Cleveland
Gets Wallace from Cleveland
Gets Milicic from Memphis

Memphis:
Sends Milici to Phoenix
Sends Gay to Cleveland
Gets Pavlovic from Cleveland
Gets West from Cleveland

...ready for the grilling.....

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

No way Memphis gives up Gay for that.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Can we not continue to overlook the fact that Shaq was 18 ppg on 60 percent shooting and just about the only thing keeping the Suns in the playoff hunt last year. He was in his best playing shape since his first season in Miami.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Question to everyone against Shaq: Do you not like him because you don't think he'd be a good fit for the team or because he'd require our two biggest trading assets?

Personally, I want us to wait to see what all is out there before we pull the trigger. That being said, turning Ben Wallace & Sasha into Shaq definitely improves our team.

Both reasons you mentioned. I don'[t like him because he clogs the paint too much for LeBron to drive the rim and we don't have the necessary kind of PF to play next to him. Shaq works best with a PF who can hit some mid range shots and work away from the rim. I cringe at the though of playing him next to someone like Andy.

If we move both of out pieces to get Shaq, how do we acquire someone to put next to him? Say we then use the MLE and put someone like sheed at the Pf, that would work okay, but what happens in a year when both of our big men need to be let go due to salary and age? I don't want a stop gap, I don't want to have to completely turn over our team every year. I'd like some youth up front, and while we have JJ and Darnell, they haven't really shown anything other than the ability to be role players yet.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

I would like Shaq as a plan B if we cant make a trade that lands us a young talented big and more.
