Windy: Shaq close to being Cav (PG. 10 update)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

I don't necessarily like Shaq because he's a one or two year fix. The big problem with our frontcourt has been age and when there are rumors about plenty of long term pieces floating around (Kaman, Chandler etc.) I'd rather try to latch onto one of those, instead of getting a piece that won't let us continue to grow as a team long term.

He also makes Lebron more of an outside shooter, which is exactly the opposite of what we need.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Just a thought about the Cavs and Shaq in relation to the draft.

Though I agree Shaq is a short-term fix, his impact, especially with the recent rumors of the Cavs possibly trading up into the top ten of the draft could be amplified.

For example, a theoretical trade-up for Stephen Curry (very hypothetical) and an acquisition of Shaq would make sense. W&G also said that we need to keep open minds to the first move the Cavs make, as it will make more sense as other decisions in trades and free agency are made thereafter.

Remember what Shaq did for Damon Jones? Unfortunately, for Cleveland, it earned DJ a contract with us. Imagine Mo, Delonte, (Curry - at least in this hypothetical situation), would all thrive with open looks. Not to mention Shaq is a very capable passer in the post.

Offensively, it makes sense -- defensively, especially in light of our atrocious pick and roll defense, it would pose some questions.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Id take Shaq, but it seems like there should be better options out there, especially after reading what Wine and Gold said. But he also said that all last season with Wally so who really knows?

Would you guys rather have Shaq or Kaman taking the length of the contracts into consideration?

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

If I was ya'll I'd take Shaq and wait for next season to sign a younger Big man.

Shaq...Reason is he is more dominant and reliable...Who knows if kaman can make it through a whole season...I feel dwight/Yao/bynum will "baby" kaman...On the other hand shaq will own the paint....

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

I think if we get shaq we need to trade for a quicker shooting PF. We have Z, but he's to slow to play alongside shaq. And we have AV, but he can't shoot enough to play alongside Shaq.

So we'd definitely need to get, say, a CV, a Marvin Williams (and switch him and Lebron off at guarding PFs), a Jamison etc.

Otherwise, we just don't have another big that fits alongside Shaq at all.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Ok so this is where I sit on the Shaq fence. I am very much in the middle of it, I see all of the positives, his and Z's cooperation would be gold, keep injuries down, make teams adjust, big cog in the middle. But I also see the very bad downside. If we have a front court of Shaq, Z, AV, Sheed (example) then LeBron is looking at this team and saying ummmmm no thanks the only players that will be here for long term are Mo, Delonte, and Boobie.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Last season Shaq was the third best center in the nba period.

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

Say we get into the top 8 of the draft.

Hypothetically we trade for Shaq. In the draft by some miracle Thabeet is there at 8 (or 6). We can take him with this hypothetical. Then that gives us Shaq and Thabeet. Now we have Z as an expriing to give us either a wing or a more versitle power forward. If we can get a wing player with size then we look the the MLE to sign Sheed. That gives us a nice rotation of young and vet players.

Yes we resign Andy in this case.

Shaq - Thabeet, Sheed
Sheed - AV, Hickson, Darnell

I know it is sacralidge to trade Z but the NBA is a business...

Re: Stein: Shaq to Cavs still in play...

I would do it if there pick is included and we can keep the 30th pick.

On a much much different team. Playing defense wasn't required of him (nor of any other sun), and he played next to the perfect PF for him to play with in Amare. Amare shoots and slashes which takes attention off of shaq and doesn't clog the paint too much. After amare went down, Shaq was the only inside threat on the team so he was like dwight howard in orlando, surrounded by nothing but perimeter shooters so he had plenty of room to do his thing. Here he wouldn't have anything close to amare to play next to. he wouldn't be able to take up all the room in the paint either, because LeBron needs the room.

FWIW, after looking at his stats post 2.20.09, Shaq played just fine after Amare went out with his eye boo boo.

The scuttlebutt this evening was that the Cavs and Suns were closing in on the now-famous Shaquille O'Neal-for-Ben Wallace trade. The two teams have discussed the trade, off and on, since February and several league sources thought the deal was nearing completion tonight.

However, a Suns source poured some cold water on the red-hot rumor saying that the deal was not done nor was it expected to be completed tonight. Said the source, "It's one of the things we're talking about now. We have a lot of irons in the fire."

To get a good feel for where the talks stand between the two teams, check out Marc Stein's column this morning.

Not sure if this posted or not but here is Chad Ford saying the Shaq/Cavs thing is heating up again...
