2010 Draft Talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
To be honest, how many young centers drafted outside of the top 20 go on to do shit? Last year, the only two drafted outside of 20 were B.J. Mullens and Goran Suton. The year before? Kosta Koufos, Nikola Pekovic, DeAndre Jordan, Omer Asik, Ante Tomic, DeVon Hardin, Sasha Kaun, and Semih Erden. What have any of those guys done in the league after two years?

And I remember everyone jerking off after DeAndre Jordan dropped in the draft, begging for the Cavaliers to snatch him in the second round (some were even hoping for him to be drafted #19). Don't get me wrong, it's important for the Cavs to find a young center. And they tried that tonight, exploring trades for Cole Aldrich. But teams don't deal lotto picks for straight cash and that's the only place you're likely to find a good, young center, ready to contribute.

Just because fans were high on Alabi and Whiteside doesn't mean management was. And perhaps for good reason. Both players could very easily be the next flash in the pan center prospect.
If teams were demanding assets with cash for second rounders, I would agree. But we could've gotten at least one for cash. So what was there to lose? At worst, it's $1-2M down the drain while at least TRYING to improve the team. At best, we could have found a decent back up center. Would it convince LeBron to stay? No, of course not. But was it a way to possibly improve the team? Yes. And now we still have nothing at center.....

I am going to say that this years Draft was a good sign that we did not get In It... If we were hard up for new talent that would and could have ment We did not have anything In the works for upgrading our roster and selling our players for picks. The only Odd thing If the Cavs were confident why didn't we offer our first for Bledsoe. My only thought Is It will be used In a trade for a star player. And If that does not work we could have a top 5 pick If worse comes to worse plus that was a Hefty price to pay for that guy. So maybe some people should see all this as a good sign.

Dan Gilbert is committed to spending money to improve this team. But firing off $2 million into the dark just to have the next DeVon Hardin on your roster for the Vegas Summer League isn't too constructive. Granted, you can find something there, but your best case scenario is Aaron Gray. Only the Joker sets 2 mill on fire and laughs about it.

I still have a really hard time believing Sac would keep both Cousins and Whiteside on their roster with the 3 other good bigs they have. Im just saying...... trades have been done before after the draft is over.

What's this CP3 rumor about him going to Orlando? It would be much appreciated.

The Thunder is really a very good player in the draft. How they manage to get in to the lottery once again is amazing.

I agree with what you are saying. One thing though is that the Cavs can not trade next years first because of the the rule that a team has to have a pick in the first round every other year. It was just a weird draft because most years you hear about a handful of 1st round picks getting bought and with a weak draft, big free agency period many teams made salary cut trades and would help those bottom feeder teams. I have said this before and I will say it again this draft was just unimpressive. Typically there are a handful of players to get excited about, but this year it was Wall, Turner then who. Even the ESPN analyst appeared to be bored during the presentation of the draft.

No, July 1st is really not a long way away. People have been saying that for weeks while we sit idly....but now it's a week from today (well, yesterday). We still don't have a coach. We didn't address the HUGE hole at center despite numerous options being available in the draft. We didn't address the back court making our current back court players more expendable via trade. Hell, outside of the Bosh article by Ford (I think?), we haven't even been linked to anyone.

Here's how I see it.

Dallas bought the 25th pick, that was the first pick sold purely for cash. After that, three Centers were taken in the draft.

Daniel Orton
Hassan Whiteside
Solomon Alabi

Now, look at those three guys. All three are multi-year projects. All have red flags, Whiteside is a toothpick with major attitude problems. Alabi never really did anything in college that tends to translate well into the NBA. His scoring won't translate and his bad rebounding will translate...into more bad rebounding.

Orton was the most intriguing of the three prospects because he has a great NBA body..but his stock dropped amid injury and attitude concerns. And let's be real, the dude averaged 3 points and rebounds per game last year.

My question is, are any of these guys clearly better than giving Sasha Kaun an opportunity? If Kaun re-entered the draft, where would he have gone?

I like Orton still, but I can understand being hesitant in getting him. But while talking about all the other stiffs that went in the 2nd round like Whiteside and Pittman and Alabi..I can't help but think we may have a better option, who's already spent an extra year or two developing as a player, already under our control.

Bring in our two Euro prospects and let them rip the summer league apart.

Shouldn't be a shock that the Cavs didn't get a pick. Apparently there were a few players they liked in the 1st round but once they went off the board by the early 20's than it made no sense to try to get back in the draft just to do something.
There was a lot of crap taken in the 2nd round and there are a few undrafted players that are just as a good prospects.

No reason to be upset that the Cavs didn't get a pick to take a project that might not make it. That's what most of the 2nd round is.

There was nothing done during the draft where I thought the Cavs missed out on an opportunity (that was realistic).

I looked at it as...get a 2nd round project:

If Lebron comes back, put him on the back burner (or even cut him);
If Lebron bolts, develop him.
