2017-18 Cleveland Indians Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Alright, onto some camp battle previews.

Since we pretty much have a very similar roster as last season there isn't a ton to talk about here, but there is the last 3-4 spots on the roster available this offseason

First we have to look at the Pitchers and the most part it is set.

Guys like Kluber, Carrasco, Bauer, Tomlin, Allen, Miller, McAllister, Otero are on the roster 99% certain

Then we have Olson, Goody who outside of a bad spring are on the roster.

Thus leaves 2-3 spots on the roster to fill and its likely Merritt, Salazar, Clev will end up with the last two spots.

That being said, we have the group of minor league starters, like Morimando, Plutko, Merryweather, who want a spot, veteran signings like Torres, Claiborne, Fife, Ogando, etc and minor league guys like Martin, Sulser, Hill, Head, etc, all trying to get a spot as well.

So when it comes to the final spot one of the decisions will also be based off the fact Merritt is out of options and the main core of our bullpen will be free agents in 19.

Next battle will be for the final utility spot on the roster. With both Gonzalez and Urshela out of options, we are likely only going to be able to keep one. That being said guys like Refsnyder, Stamets and Shaffer all are trying for that spot as well.

Last spot will be the final OF spot. That being said we do have injuries to players, so guys like Guyer and Brantley may not be ready to start the season, but you have Upton, Davis and Barnes competing with Almonte, Naquin, Allen for essentially one true spot and maybe playing time if those two arent ready to start the season.

Diaz may compete for either INF or OF spot. Though it is a good probability at least for this season, he will be at AAA and keep him developing at 3B.

My early 25 man roster prediction:

Starters: Kluber, Carrasco, Bauer, Tomlin, Clev
Bullpen: Allen, Miller, Otero, McAllister, Goody, Olson, Merritt
C: Gomes, Perez
INF: Alonzo, EE, Kipnis, Lindor, Ramirez, Urshela
OF: Chisenhall, Zimmer, Davis, Brantley, Guyer

(if Brantley cannot go then Allen, if Guyer it will be Almonte)

That's my piece to make this thread get back on track. What do you guys think?

Is there a chance, if we keep Salazar, we can turn him into a closer after Allen leaves?

On paper this seems wise in a lot of ways, but I don’t think Salazar wants to do that at all. I think he would rather be traded to a team that would start him than be a closer it feels like

A stat man who doesnt know stats, but says he does, is trolling this a bit. At least I have actually coached multiple sports lol

More or less we are getting off track since there hasnt been a ton of news this offseason and we have an odd new poster of late, so it makes it easy to get off track.

The fact that you've coached multiple sports has nothing to do with the discussions at hand. They neither make your arguments better or worse.

Claimed Ben Taylor off waivers from Boston also.

Do you know anything about him? This is at least a safety net move for a young talent. My biggest question is can he be a fixture in the bullpen

Casting a wide net for a large competition.

Taylor has some juice, but I learned a while ago that they deserve the benefit of the doubt on these types of guys.

Two options left, too.

That was the one I found, Strong fastball, he mixes speed with, but lacks a solid secondary pitch from that scouting report. Willis was one of his pitching coaches last season, so worst case scenario is a guy like Armstrong in a sense. He can pitch, but the question is, can he develop a strong secondary pitch to compliment his fastball?

With the fact he has options will help us out a ton, especially when next season we are losing main guys in the bullpen. I don't know if he will do much this season, but next year is when he will truly get a chance.
