"Here's where the deal fell apart, league sources said: Indiana wanted no protections on a future Cavaliers first-round pick. Cleveland balked, insisting the pick have lottery protection -- and Indiana moved on"
I have two reactions
(1) it is ridiculous to worry about a Cavaliers future pick having lottery protections, and CERTAINLY to let a deal fall apart based on that. (By now we've heard a lot of different things on why deal fell apart.)
(2) unless you felt there was a good chance LeBron was leaving, in which case you might want to be very careful with those lottery protections.
Also in story...
"Among rival executives, there's empathy for Irving's trade request. They see shrewdness in the move to beat James out of Cleveland....He can try out a new team for two years and decide to re-sign for a five-year maximum contract -- or walk in free agency in 2019."
