2017-2018 off-season thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Such a weird feeling to look at the roster page on Cavs.com and see guys like Kyle Korver, Derrick Rose, Isaiah Thomas, Jose Calderon, Jeff Green, Jae Crowder.

Still doesn't feel real.

And even more guys on the 2016 championship team could be moved before this season. Shump being the most obvious.

By some measures, Jeff Green was the worst player in the NBA last year. Getting Crowder should really minimize Green's minutes and the damage he'd likely cause. (And last year wasn't exactly a fluke, since he's never been good.)

I seriously would have preferred bringing back Derrick Williams over Green.

Signing Calderon on the first day of free agency made no sense. I'm sure he would have been available to sign today if the Cavs had still wanted him after adding Rose and IT. His contract is fully guaranteed, by the way.

Having significantly reduced their luxury tax with the Irving, maybe now they can simply cut Green or Calderon. Probably not Calderon given IT's health situation.

The other option, of course, is to pay another team to take on one or more of their salaries. I thought that was likely to be Jefferson's fate. Cavs can now send out some $5M in trades, so they might be able to dump two salaries this way.

Obviously, it's purely anecdotal, but I find it interesting that multiple posters are saying they don't want Wade on this team given where Wade is in his career. In theory, I may agree (though Rose could get hurt and IT may not be healthy), but in practice I think it would be impossible to say no to him. Ideally, he would come off the bench though.

I don't think Jeff Green is a savior at all but LeBron personally recruited him to the team. And while LeBron's player evaluation isn't perfect, I'm sure LeBron envisioned him for some kind of role that Green bought into as well.

So I'm optimistic that Green will be a solid piece here.

I have a feeling many people are going to be surprised by Green and Rose this year. As long as they are healthy they will be recognized for the players they are. Its funny, people constantly complain about almost all the fringe guys we get. For example, JR, Derrick Williams, RJ when we got him etc.

Funny how people forget how much better literally everyone is who plays with Lebron (Except Dion :celb (14):) is. The fact alone that the guy is all of 6'9" with above average athleticism alone with get him on the floor. Just wait for the line up of Bron, him, Crowder, Krover, and JR because I promise that will be happening a lot.

I'll take all the dislikes for the time being but just y'all wait.

Rose looked good for the Knicks last year. That is before he injured his knee near the season's end. With limited minutes there's a chance he'll be healthy come playoff time.

I don't know where to put this...

But it's happening.

Melo to Cavs.

Love to Suns.

Suns assets to Knicks

I am with you. Rose and Green off the bench will be huge. I think people don't realize how big of an upgrade they are for our bench. Now I realize Rose is starting for now, but that is by emergency, not on purpose.

As for Shump, I fear we might have to use the stretch provision on him, I don't see him getting traded unless we hold on to him for the deadline and getting a big salary to match. If this happens we might have to cut someone useful.

Overall we screwed up the off season badly. We got further away from competing with GS. Rose and Green are indeed nice adds off the bench, Crowder is a good add too, and if we hadn't lost anybody from last year we would be looking at a marginal upgrade. But we lost a top 20 NBA player who was under contract for another two years and didn't replace him with another top 20 NBA player. The best thing we got was the NJ pick and that will not really help us this year.

What we really needed was to add a major piece in the form of a top two way player, and despite two such players moving this off season for relatively little we didn't get either of them.

Unfortunately, Shumpert may be the best they have to guard Irving and the many other scoring PGs in the league. Unless a better option can be acquired, he may wind up keeping his roster spot.

The Cavs offseason moves look like Gilbert and Lebron will part ways. People don't like that, but that is what is happening. It would take a miracle title run to keep the duo intact and that appears unlikely. I just see Lebron leaving to "fat Elvis" his business side some more with another franchise.
