2017 Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Now you can definitely have lots of two TE sets, but in those situations, for 2017, what is best for the Browns. Giving most of those snaps to Barnidge or to DeValve, who you invested a 4th rd pick in and who flashed a few times late in the year. And if you determine that the answer is DeValve(which you should),
Why exactly?

I am sure the pipe fitter union is going to file an unlawful firing lawsuit over this.

Given the timing, one would have to assume Barnidge asked to be released, no? Not that upset about it

Why exactly?
-Young athletic player this regime drafted in the 4th round last year. Taking him higher than any projections because they liked him and felt there were a few other teams in on him in the 4th. This wasn't a 7th round flier. He was a guy they had an inside connection to due to his coach being friends with our TE coach and targeted in the 4th round.

-In only 92 snaps last year, had 10 receptions(of 12 targets) and 2 TDs.

-Why would they invest in the guy and then stifle his development in year two by making him be the 3rd TE behind a guy about to hit 30 that is not a part of the next 4-5 years?

I don't like the move to release Barnidge. It's great we have promising youth at the position but wait till they at least prove they can start before giving up a proven starter. I think this is just like letting Whitner go last year. Poyer and Campbell had flashed that they might be able to fill out our safety positions, but at the end of the day neither were up to the task.

If our young TEs step up in camp and show that the depth is there to let Barnidge go then go for it. Letting him go right now just creates a unnecessary hole that could be left open all season.

I don't think he ever liked being in Cleveland that much. He was just in over his head with Clevelands deteriorating roads and bridges

If forced, I will admit Barnidge's blocking had slipped the past two years... and there's reports that the eaves on his house are a little uneven, and he cut corners in his last roofing job.

I think there are clearly 2 different answers here, don't think it's as clear cut as you're making it.

If you fall in the develop the youngins over all camp: Devalve makes more sense
If you fall into the maximize chance to win/maximize help you give to the young QB camp: Barnidge makes more sense

Because you cannot in good conscious say that you believe Devalve will be more of a contributor next year than Barnidge would be.

On the same plane of thinking, if two of our young TEs don't step up, Hue is left not running his full scheme. They could have cut Barnidge reps in camp and allow the other guys the chance to step up. If they did, let Barnidge go during camp or at the start of the preseason. If two of the TEs don't step up, it puts alot of more pressure on surrounding positions.

No depth on this roster and they go and do stupid shit like this.

They've already seen DeValve for a full year in practice OTAs and games. This move would seem to be a clear indication they like wha they've seen already and want to ramp up his reps and involvement ASAP.

Thy simply do not want DeValve or Njoku to be getting third TE reps or third TE snaps.

And what Gary showed last year does not make it so obvious that he would have a bigger impact in 2017 than DeValve can.

If 2018 is the year to realistically target winning, why not have a piece you will be counting on for that year and beyond up and running and already fully integrated.

Nobody will like Barnidge getting cut because of that one good year he had.

But he was awful last year, and he simply does not block well.

I have no problem with this, but I'd like to see a better blocking tight end acquired to take his place on the roster.

Devalve was already better than Gary last year, IMO.

Good guy, deserves a chance to win a ring.

One step forward, two steps off a cliff.
