2017 Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Nobody will like Barnidge getting cut because of that one good year he had.

But he was awful last year, and he simply does not block well.

I have no problem with this, but I'd like to see a better blocking tight end acquired to take his place on the roster.
Its like Peyton Hillis all over again (probably not as extreme, but you know what I mean).

They've already seen DeValve for a full year in practice OTAs and games. This move would seem to be a clear indication they like wha they've seen already and want to ramp up his reps and involvement ASAP.

Thy simply do not want DeValve or Njoku to be getting third TE reps or third TE snaps.

And what Gary showed last year does not make it so obvious that he would have a bigger impact in 2017 than DeValve can.

If 2018 is the year to realistically target winning, why not have a piece you will be counting on for that year and beyond up and running and already fully integrated.
The way I see it, we will have an offensive line in place, two TEs, hopefully two RBs & hopefully three skilled WRs after this years development. Add in a nasty defensive line, solid linebackers, and hopefully a developed secondary.

We need to grab a good CB this year. To not only compliment Haden, but potentially replace him when the time comes.

If you grab one of the stud QBs, they most certainly should be able to come in day 1 and compete.

I won't deny that Barnidge most likely peaked 2 seasons ago and is on the decline. My issue with releasing him is about depth and properly running Hue's scheme for the benefit of every player. Throwing players who aren't ready out there is going to hurt the development not just of that player but others around them.

If this was a camp decision or they at least had Njoku go through rookie camp and he was lighting it up, I think this would go over alot better. If two TEs don't step up, we will be left picking up other teams scrapes to try to fill the position. Barnidge would have been able to give at least average TE production and held down the spot till someone was ready to take over.

We need a blocking specialist at TE, we have 2 recieving specialist and Barnidge cant block.

I wouldn't even hate using Irving or Coleman as a blocking TE in some sets. Report as eligible and keep an extra offensive lineman because of it.

Maybe too creative, but not sure why teams dont do that. Sure he wont go out much for a pass, but if he does and no one covers him then pass it to him and get the 5-10 easy yards.

NEVER, and i mean NEVER EVER, NEVER NEVER EVER NEVER.... NEVER put the ball in the hands of Cam Erving. That dude fucks up enough without having the ball.

Well with Hue saying Peppers will get a chance to play offense, looks like it will be TE.

:chuckle:
Anyone remember when a poster made the case that Johnny Manziel could play TE because he caught that throw back pass one time in college? Good times!!!!

If our young TEs step up in camp and show that the depth is there to let Barnidge go then go for it. Letting him go right now just creates a unnecessary hole that could be left open all season.

Letting him go now is as player-friendly a cut as possible. The teams will draft, and the ones left with holes at TE can talk to Gary, who will have time to negotiate, ask around, and move his family. I also think it signals "this guy doesn't suck, it's not as if he couldn't make the cut, but we're going in a different direction."

I see your point and it's sound and logical tho. I think it speaks volumes about DeValve and his ability to rotate tires and replace transmissions.

Excuse me, do you not remember the 30 something yard trick play streak he caught that didn't count because Crowell had to false start?!

Oh yea, maybe that was it. Not a college play

Gary was brutal last year.....way too many drops, and his blocking sucks.

Wouldn't mind Jake Butt or George Kittle who are both known for good blocking and pass catching.

What's the latest with Butt's injury? (Insert joke here).

He was definitely a good player throughout College.

Kind of a cold-blooded move after Barnidge just got done directing the team facility renovations. Not surprising for Haslam.

That being said, I'm not sure how trading up to grab a TE is some kind of acknowledgement of DeValve. This seems mor like a cost cutting move on paper, with the team knowing Barnidge was going to be a backup and figured DeValve could do that at a fraction of the cost. Oh well, it was a nice run while it lasted.

Since I don't know a whole lot about him, How good would Calvin Pryor be for this team? It seems like he is on the trade block

@Randolphkeys and anyone else who knows about the player and how you think he would fit with Williams's defense. I doubt we make a move for him, but he would be an interesting guy.

PS. Another rumor for McCarron so we shall see if we make a move tonight for him since it will be done by tonight.
