2017 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why would you move your below average hitting, elite defensive catcher to 1B?

The guy has hit .237 over the past 3 years. He's not suddenly going to become a good hitter just because of less daily wear and tear.

The biggest issue is trying to find a spot for Mejia when he is ready likely in the 19 season.

Then Gomes gets the fuck out.

How are you not getting this?

Do we keep Gomes or do we keep Perez? Both have about equal value in a trade, Gomes may just have a slight more value in a trade.

Thankful for Yan having club option(s) starting in '20

Meija could be ready in '19 and maybe some foolish team takes Yan for a half year.

Defensive ability of a catcher equals more than his hitting value for the most part. Both Gomes and Perez could net us decent prospect(s) back since they are both above average behind the plate.

I don't see finding a spot for Mejia an issue at all?

I don't mind he and Gomes splitting time at all, especially having Gomes play vs LHP. You don't necessarily want Mejia playing every day behind the plate anyway.

Gomes plays 67% of games right now and Perez 33%; it seems like a pretty good split. Except every time I see Perez's batting average next to his name in the lineup:chuckle:

Don't be so quick to call that team "foolish".

If they have a young and talented rotation going through a rebuild who they want to grow for the future, Yan is a great catcher for that situation currently.

Don't think it's just a coincidence that we've had historic pitching staffs while Yan has been our primary catcher...

Can see an organization like Atlanta, who in a season or 2 will be tossing out a ton of young starters, with 4 top 100 prospects in AA or higher right now, giving up a decent piece for him to help those guys through their early growing pains.

Some good things happening in Mahoning Valley early on, especially at the top of both the lineup and pitching rotation. Through 8 games:

Oscar Gonzalez: .367/.375/.600...2 HR, 1 2B, 8 RBI

Ulysses Cantu: .424/.441/.667...1 HR, 5 2B, 3 RBI

Semad Taylor: .382/.432/.529...3 2B, 1 3B, 2 SB, 6 R

2 big name guys are off to a slower start though.

Will Benson: .214/.241/.250...1 2B, 3 RBI, 13 K

Nolan Jones: .261/.414/.304...1 2B, 3 RBI 6 BB

Honestly to me Benson didn't look like a guy who would be ready all that quickly, but has a ton of upside. Benson and Jones are what 19 so they will likely be in the A ball for a couple seasons with Jones moving positions and Benson finding his spot. Do you know how well Jones is looking defensively at 3rd?

Not sure why Jones would have to change positions. Not much professional experience to judge on right now, but he was a SS in HS, and should profile well at 3B.

Benson looks like that to everyone...he's a guy with physical tools you can't teach, but holes in his swing that he needs to learn to fix, some of which are huge...the things that can't be taught are what made him a 1st round pick (size, speed, strength). But still, it would be nice to see his K rate lower year to year, but he's K'd in almost half of his ABs to this point. Still a long way to go on the season though, so hopefully that changes.

And why would Jones change positions? He was a SS in high school, why would he move off of 3B in the pros. He's our 3B of the future, flashed big time defensively in the AZL, which is usually a sloppy league defensively (as is the NY-Penn league). His power needs to reappear though.

Sorry the second part I guess you guys misunderstood. I was referring to how is he looking at 3rd since I know it was a position change for him since he was a SS in college. I got to watch the draft last season so I remember he was converting over to 3rd in the pros.

HS, not college.

And I got you. Nah, I do'nt think the learning curve will be very long for him at 3B.

Well Bimbo since you're online, Bobby Bradley... 1B/DH... 2019...

Why have Brantley play 1st for a year when Bradley could be storming to the show?
