2018 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So mainly nothing skill related? Moreso the offense he was in or off the field stuff? Does anyone feel Rosen is more skilled?

I think the skill-related questions about Mayfield come in the form of the offense he plays in and questions about his mechanics, specifically his footwork, at the next level.

Honest question, what does Rosen or any other quarterback, do better than Mayfield? The only rebuttal I keep hearing is he's short or grabs his crotch. Nothing else. What happens if he does check out at 6'1. Is that still to small? We all know who gets through their reads the quickest, makes the right decisions , doesn't turn the ball over, has the best accuracy, has one of the best qbr's we have ever seen...has plenty of arm. Doesn't get injured, and is the one still playing for a championship. Is it really just all because he's not 6'4?

It seems like as the season progresses, Mayfield seems to be a young Brees while Rosen is closer to an Eli Manning style of QB. I’ll take either at the end of the day. I think the system Mayfiled is in, isn’t always favorable to translat into the pros and that plus his size is hurting his stock. Rosen plays in a pro style offense and looks like a pro style QB, with his height, size, arm etc

First off, I'm at the point where I believe one of those two QBs will be the #1 pick in the draft. Anyone else would be an upset. I have Rosen ahead by a slight margin, I'll go into a quick bullet point why:

*Both show a refined passing motion and accuracy that improves from year to year. They both have adequate arm strength, even if neither are freaks like Mahomes.

* Rosen's improvisation maneuvering in the pocket has become underrated around RCF. He doesn't rush for positive yards, but he buys time. That's what you look for in an NFL QB.

* Mayfield isn't just running to manipulate the pocket and coverage. He leaves open throws on the field in order to try rushing for a few yards. He doesn't slide consistently, taking unnecessary hits. There's a line between escaping a rush and being reckless, and an NFL sized front seven would have punished him for a few questionable plays he tries to make.

* Hand size has been a question with Mayfield. I won't write anything else on it until he gets measured. SI wrote about that issue when he lost his job to Davis Webb and then Mahomes at A&M. In bad weather, hand size matters.

* Running a dropback offense for three years, Rosen has a picture perfect base dropping back and setting his feet to throw. Mayfield runs a lot of plays from the gun and with pistol action. While the NFL has adopted more pistol, dropping back from center is still a necessity, and one A&M didn't emphasize as much as UCLA.

Not sure how much Mayfield's arrest should be held against him. A dumb decision in the moment for sure. Not a DUI though like the QB in Columbus got, and I don't think anyone questions his character (rightfully so).

If his height of 6'1 checks out does that change the general opinion for you guys? Just a quick search makes me think 6'1 isn't too short. I mean there's quite a few good QBs around that .

Russell at 5'11
Brees at 6'
Tyrod Taylor at 6'1
Aaron Rodgers at 6'2
Romo at 6'2
Dalton at 6'2
Garappolo at 6'2
Dak at 6'2
Etc.

Those are exceptions, not the rule. 6'2 is the floor for a dropback QB. Players shorter than that need a special offensive system to hide their disadvantages. I'd like to see some football fans finally admit Russell Wilson DOES miss seeing throws from the pocket. He and Brees have OCs who playcalling for their limitations, but with Wilson especially, he misses throws moving around and looking for his passing window.

Not sure he has top notch arm talent, but he does seem to be accurate. Rosen has best pure arm talent in this class, but has injury concerns, stone feet, and also known for a bad attitude.

I am rosen over mayfield guy, but neither seem to be a perfect solution to me at this point,.

No.

Most of those guys are the exception to the rule, not the rule itself. The fact that you had to use Dalton and Tyrod to prove your point is also telling.

If you research the percentage of NFL QBs who are over 6’2, it’s astounding.

Being short is a tremendous disadvantage for quarterbacks. Even the good ones will admit that.

Not trying to prove a point just current starting/starting caliber players 6'2 or less. If I wanted to prove points of course I'd go Doug flutie and such lol. It's a question to you guys to get your opinions.

i watch Rosens heighlights and think "eh pretty good"....then watch this and get goosebumps...very first thing stated is a generational arm talent. Literally almost every play , NFL type throws, on the money with super quick reaction and progressing through reads

I know. Not giving you a hard time at all, just offering a counter argument.

This is technically from last season but still an accurate depiction.

Excellent summary Keyes.

I can't find anything regarding a bad attitude for Rosen either. What I've seen on the field looks like pretty solid NFL potential, more than what you see in most college prospects.

I have a gut feeling that secret reports about bad attitude could be put out there to sabotage him going to the Browns at #1.

The height really shouldn't matter when you're that good at moving in the pocket and finding the throwing lanes, and Mayfield is excellent.

That and the ball placement already being at an elite level, he literally already plays like Russell wilson.

Keys said he takes unneeded hits, and he does, so he'll need to chill out on trying to run over dudes at the next level and learn how to slide, but everything else screams success at the next level. He likes to manipulate players with his eyes in the intermediate and long range throws. Again, super advanced.

Not worried about his size in the cold. Actually might be more worried about Rosen playing in the cold as a California boy/very stiff. Mayfield is tough as nails and would be fine in the weather it's just can his hands handle the hard ass ball.
