Maybe I'm just stubborn from my read on him in 2015, but as a freshman, Lamar Jackson openly admitted to often not even knowing what down it was. The DOWN.
His high school didn't even have a playbook.
He also openly admitted to having no idea what was supposed to happen on half the plays he was calling his freshman year. He just got by on athleticism. He's an elusive runner, I admit.
So sure, we can talk about him as a physical freak. He did improve last season, but I think he's more of a runner who gets by on being faster than almost everyone else. He still needs to improve as a passer and throwing with anticipation.
I am fully unconvinced that he has enough between the ears to pick up an NFL playbook, recognize defenses, and set protections. Ever.
That's ok--not everyone is suited for it. Pro QB is one of the toughest positions in sports. People with great talent fail frequently. Peyton Manning extended his career by playing chess when everyone else played checkers.
Someone may draft him in the first round. I just wouldn't want it to be my team.
I think he's a WR at the next level. Now, I do think this could be a very successful transition for him. He's a big play waiting to happen in space.
