2019 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think I've seen Taylor Rapp play better football than Derrick Kindred. I think I trust Rapp to play a zone moreso than Kindred, who I've never seen cover well.

When I think of the guys who are football players first, prospects second, the first one that comes to mind is Chris Borland--so I tend to stay on those linebackers. Having Rapp as a MLB who drops into that zone in the middle of the field could be intriguing.

You keep bringing up Borland, who I really liked that one year he played for the Niners. How do you feel about Rapp's teammate Ben Burr-Kirven, who more closely fits the physical profile of Boreland?

Honestly, I haven't studied him at all.

I'm really, really behind on NFL draft stuff this year. Partially because it's not as interesting for the Browns this year. Partially because I couldn't figure out a good place for film after NFL Draft Breakdown was shut down. The only stuff I've watched is really targets for the Browns, and some guys for this mock draft.

Based off about 5 minutes of his film, he looks stiff to me. 5th to 7th round grade, special teamer and backup middle linebacker expectations.

I see. I did watch a few Washington games, and Burr-Kirven is a guy who looked a lot more like Boreland than Rapp. I'm not sure how Rapp would play closer to the line because in college he was rarely in the box compared to Kirven, who was among the leaders in the nation in tackles along with very good coverage grades from PFF.

My knock on Kirven is his size limitations and average athleticism, but he outweighs Rapp 230 to 209, and ran faster than Rapp (4.58 compared to 4.77) and has actually played linebacker. As you said, interesting fourth linebacker. Rapp just threw me for such a loop with that crappy 40 time.

Sometimes you gotta ignore a 40 time. I'm comfortable that Rapp can make plays in zone coverage.

But, betting on a 4.77 DB is risky as hell.

For what it's worth, I have no interest in Rapp as a linebacker. I think the only time it makes sense to move a safety down to that "Monster" role is if the player is a physical freak who just can't make plays in the secondary, like Mark Barron.

Burr Kirven also had a crazy tackles share. Made like 19% of the team's tackles on defense.

If he were bigger/stronger/faster, he'd be LVE.

Gotta say, it's weird that the draft isn't the Browns' Super Bowl this year. And not even having a 1st round pick takes it to another level. I can just watch the thing for shits & giggles now.

While I feel the same way, I think I will get obsessive once the draft is here and the browns are on the board. Then each pick I will over analyze and talk myself into all 3 of our 5th round picks being future pro bowlers.

You will too, its how we are built as Uber Browns fans.

Oh, for sure. I'm still interested in the draft (it's a very good one) and the players that the Browns take, especially in the earlier rounds. Should be able to get one or two immediate contributors (at least), which is exciting.

LB and Safety and Right Tackle, other than that I don't know if a 2nd round or 3rd rookie could start which is crazy to say.

Need a WR to replace Hollywood in a year, but lineman, linebackers and safeties are very important. And maybe a backup QB?

I should rephrase.

If he were taller and heavier, he'd be LVE.
To put it into perspective:

Ben Burr Kirven and LVE have nearly the same athletic numbers. And they were both highly productive statistical career with a crazy market share.

I'm glad you added more to that because I had no idea what LVE was :chuckle:

I'd say right now it's shaping up like this for the Browns draft wise (in order)--

Early (2nd/3rd)
S
DL

I see the Browns taking advantage of two pretty deep positions with their first two picks... I can see safety being the 2nd round pick with starter quality players being there but if a good DT falls, then I'd expect them to improve their depth behind Ogunjobi and Richardson...

Mid-rounds (4th/5th)
CB
LB
OL
Playmaker (RB)

These are all secondary needs that could use additional depth.. They have a top-4 at CB (Mitchell, Ward, Carrie and Gaines) but could use a developmental corner to ascend next year... They desperately need to inject youth into the LB core however Dorsey doesn't have a history of drafting them until the middle rounds... New OL coach James Campen is a mid-round OL expert, helping mold several young OL into contributors while in GB... While Dorsey did add 3 lineman to the backup mix, none of their contracts are prohibitive and adding some more depth to the core is never a bad thing... If there's one thing we know about Dorsey it's that he likes speed and he likes talent.. With RB being the likeliest of scenarios with Duke on the outs, I see Dorsey going for an offensive playmaker of his liking to groom...

Later rounds (6th/7th)

H-Back
K
Edge

Some of the later round picks could be traded away since there isn't a need for a large rookie class... If they keep them, perhaps a late round kicker could be added for competition since none has been added this off-season... Without a true FB, the Browns operated with 4 TEs last year and thus far only have 3... I could see them adding a FB/TE hybrid to help alleviate that and bring in for blocking situations... While edge is currently 4 deep, that's a primary position for Dorsey so if there's talent and they have a pick, it's always a possibility...
