2019 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Mostly agree with this. I should clarify that when I say he has, e.g., a 50/50 chance of becoming an efficient inside-the-arc bucket getter at the NBA level, that's a compliment. Most prospects are too behind-the-curve either in skills or athleticism or both to have any potential to break down NBA defenses in the halfcourt. RJ has a lot of potential to do that, but his off-the-dribble game still has enough holes that it's not a sure thing.

The one thing that I do think is a sure thing for him is his passing ability. There are a lot of guys who're dangerous enough scorers to draw double teams and/or make the defense collapse on drives, but relatively few of them have the quick decision making ability to find the open man when that happens. I think RJ has that going for him and that's a big part of why he has the potential to be a real star, not just a run-of-the-mill 15-20 ppg scorer like, e.g., Langford.

Maybe it’s PTSD from watching Sexton, but I’m not sold on the passing yet. He has the vision (the most important aspect of being a playmaker probably imo), but the mentality really needs to change from what it was at Duke. I’d bet on it happening eventually, but definitely could also see him never changing.

The one MAJOR area that I think is overlooked with Barrett in the halfcourt that he didn’t hardly do at Duke: pindowns. I don’t see how anyone will stop him coming off pindowns to his left hand. It’s another area where you’d see flashes. You set a down screen for him at the elbow and he can get to the rim in one dribble coming off of it. If the Cavs draft him, I really hope they run those sorts of sets for him. His floater was yet another thing that was just okay, but if he improves it some he will be tough to stop in those situations.

Agree that the mentality needs to improve, but the ability is there. Trying to get some players to run an offense and drive-and-kick is like trying to run 2019 apps on a 10-year-old phone. The processing power just isn't there...no matter what you do, it's not going to run smoothly. RJ just needs a good coach so that he continues to hone those skills. I don't think he's so incorrigibly selfish that he's going to force up low-percentage shots when he sees passing lanes in the NBA.

That lack of spacing was really a double edged sword.

First, he had no driving lanes at all to speak of. He does need to clean up his mentality some with the head down drives right into the help man, though. While catching up on some of their games, I saw a play where Bolden was posting up looking for the entry pass and Barrett just drove directly into Bolden and his man lol. But with that said, he almost never had an open lane.

Second, the lack of spacing around him didn’t allow him to show off his passing as much as you’d like. I think he’s a very good drive & kick guy when he is a willing passer. There were quite a few clips were he had easy reads to Tre Jones, Jack White, or Goldwire in the short corner off drives that he ignored... so it’s tough to tell if he chose not to make those passes because of their lack of shooting ability, or because of his hero ball mentality.

I’m strongly considering Barrett as the #2 guy at this point. I think it’s scary for people that he doesn’t have one really consistent offensive skill to fall back on, myself included.

But he’s at least okay in basically every category on that end... you take his age + the flashes you see and I’d be willing to make the bet on him improving at least one of these areas. I’ve seen some pretty impressive ball handling flashes, for example. In their game at Wake Forest he had a Harden-esque stepback three. It feels like he’s just scratching the surface in so many areas.

Totally agree with the bolded. It isn't just getting to the rim that spacing helps. Once Love was back and Hood was gone, both Cedi and Sexton were both getting to the rim at will and the drive and kick game started working much better.

We also saw that once guys were trying to stop Collin's 3 and his drive the passing lanes were open and he was better able to get the ball to the roll man.

IF we had Cedi, Barrett, and Sexton running the pick and roll with Zizic and pick and pop with Love, we are looking a pretty fun simple offense that also uses the drive and kick. If Barrett can hit the 3 we are also looking at good spacing as well.

4 guys that can easily get you 4 assists and 2-3 who will regularly get 5. That is a nice offense that shouldn't be too easy to stop.

My favorite player in this draft is Ja Morant

Collin Sexton has no bearing on who I would pick with this selection, at all.

I would take Morant over Zion Williamson in a heartbeat

Do you see him as a more athletic Steve Nash? Do you think Zion is limited based on being a power forward in today’s game in terms of being a super star?

I wonder who had the most influence on pickin' Colling at #8. Some mocks that I saw putted him out of top 10, and yet we couldn't get anyone better than him at #8. I hope the same eye uses the pick, whatever position we fall, at the best.

If the Knicks DONT get the number 1 pick, it’ll be the biggest upset in the history of the league.
The writing has been on the wall for awhile now.
I just don’t see how they can not give it to them.

It's a lottery. No gifts. Besides, what have they done to deserve any gifts?

Gilbert.

Nothing. But that market has been dead for decades.
KD, KI and the #1 pick to have Zion. It instantly becomes the #1 nba market. No question
