2023-2024 Buckeye Basketball

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He might be the guy, but it reminds me an awful lot of all the NFL and NBA teams where a franchise fires an unpopular coach mid-season, the team goes on a mini-run for a few weeks, and then the guy gets hired full-time as seemingly a default decision without much thought put into it.

Why not make the calls to guys like Cronin, Miller, May, Grant, etc.? Just seems odd to make that decision so quickly when he has zero experience building a program. You might get through it and Diebler is still the best choice, but now you don’t know.

So the transfer portal opens up tomorrow so I think that's a reason why they didn't want to wait. I think Ohio State basketball is now in the programs that need to develop and hold on to players to succeed. I don't think they are a one and done type program anymore.

Also Jake Diebler has been the top recruiter for the coaching staff. He has been able to do that even in when he was at Vandy and where he recruited Garland.

I also think Holtmann taking the DePaul job made it easier to take a swing on Diebler. The money owed to Holtmann will be offset by his new DePaul contract. Diebler should get a cheaper contract and if he doesn't work out, you don't have to worry about owing big money to him and Holtmann.

#2 seed. I think it was Wake Forest was #1 seed in their quadrant. Interesting matchup if it plays to form.

I guess time will tell with Diebler. I don't love or hate it at this point. I don't put a ton of weight in the 6-2 record as teams often respond to a firing and play inspired ball. I'm guessing they liked the roster and the recruits that are lined up and looked at Diebler as a guy who can retain that. He's also a pretty easy sell and came cheap.

I'm curious as to whether they really believed this deeply in Diebler or if the feelers they put out for other candidates did not pan out well. Did other perspective candidates not see this as a place that will provide the resources necessary to win at the highest level? I once thought this was a job a level below the blue blood schools, but certainly a destination where you could compete for a title and consistently make deep runs. I'm not sure if or how much the NIL and portal have changed that.

I kind of wonder the same thing. The thing is all the NIL money for basketball players seem a lot lower than football players. I could see some mid major coaches saying to themselves that they only want to go to a blue blood basketball program that doesn't have to compete with a football team for NIL money if they are going to jump into that ring. I could also see the mid major coaches decide they will stay at their current job until NIL is settle a little bit more since it's less expectations and just taking a step or two up might not mean they are in a better position to build a program.

I also think the NIL landscape in basketball is different than football. I don't think that the transfer portal with NIL money is the same avenue to get better that it is in football. Like if you are identified as someone to throw big NIL money to transfer in basketball, you most likely are going to be able to go in the NBA draft.

Also the pool of high school prospects that can come in and make an impact as a freshman is small. Basically it's the guys who make the Team USA under-18, 17, etc teams. Those are basically one and done players. How easy is it for one program to recruit multiple of those guys even with a lot of that money. It's basically 10 players and some of them decide to just play in the G-league because the money will probably be similar.
