#25: ATH, Jabrill Peppers

"Peppers can't cover" "1 interception all throughout college!!"

Peppers caught Winston’s misfire for the interception and he closed quickly for a third-down stop in the passing game, but perhaps the big story for Peppers is how much deep safety he’s playing. 35 of his 37 snaps came at free safety, making it 77 of 81 snaps so far this preseason. Peppers was expected to be more of a box safety coming out of college, but he’s showing well in more of a true free safety role.

And when that is coupled with all the coverage sacks and lack of pass offense from TB....that's really encouraging.

I was all over him for not having interceptions at Michigan. When he picked Winston off, I didn't even think of it. He & Garrett make me feel very good about the first round this year. Njoku worries me right now, though.

Njoku's a project. Rookie TEs basically never produce. You gotta give him at least three years.

It makes me wonder if the Browns cut Barnidge a bit too early. They could use someone who can actually receive and block, albeit not explosively.

I think the main thing for Peppers right now, at least from what I've seen, is that his athleticism really stands out even among NFL players. Given his inexperience he may be out of position on some plays or make the wrong read, but he's got the speed and strength to make up for it.

I also think exclusively playing deep safety so far is a conscious move on the part of Gregg and Hue to simplify what's on his plate. I feel like we'll start to see more of it in year 2 once he's had enough time to get comfortable with what should be his long term NFL position.

...then why did they cut their starting TE? Me thinks they expected him to at least be able to hold his own. Just like how the team is looking to trade for a WR after drafting 4 of them last year and signing Kenny Britt, I think they aren't going to wait 3 years on him. He doesn't have to be studly this year but has to at least show enough to stay on the field.

Edit: forgot about DeValve, fair point. I don't think, though, that they have a 3 year plan in mind with him with how much they seem to like 2 TE sets with the young QBs.

In terms of looking to trade for a WR...could that potentially be because the team feels Kizer is better/more ready than anticipated? I don't think they'd be as willing to give up a pick or other pieces unless they felt pretty good about the QB. Otherwise they hold on to everything to ensure they can get their guy in 2018.

Really interesting tidbit from PFF. I absolutely love what I've seen so far, his sure tackling is a welcome change from last year's disastrous safety play.

Always thought he'd do great.

He just has "it."
