#25: ATH, Jabrill Peppers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
PFF’s Initial reaction to the game on Jabrill: “Safety Jabrill Peppers was noticeable on defense, flying around making plays on defense. Peppers was disruptive against the run, blowing up a block on a stretch run to the outside which led to a significant loss on the play. He also forced incompletions downfield and laid a big hit in the end zone on a tipped ball that still had a chance to be caught.”

Very interesting to see that Ward didn't score glowingly high. I guess... he did have one missed tackle... but... damn.

Does this take into account his fg block or is this strictly defense that’s non special teams? Also if he gives up 1 catch and they only throw to him 3 times, it’s going to effect his grade.

It does not take the FG block into account. You're correct, though. They don't have a metric to quantify how some guys just don't get thrown at (yet?).

Yeah, for coverage, I think PFF only grades CBs on plays in which their coverage is targeted. Kind of silly to ignore all the plays when the coverage is so good that they don't get thrown at. :conf (11):

Peppers, Ward, Gaines, and Mitchell were all noticeably effective. I was hoping the Myles + Larry tandem would be more disruptive to be honest. Ogbah still hasn't shined outside his tipped pass. The secondary really held their own this game.

Ward's grade will almost certainly be revised.

Huh?

How does the ravens o line check out compared to the rest of the league?

Randall, Peppers, and Ward are quickly becoming the pillars of this secondary. Despite Gregg Williams being ass, these guys are holding his "bend don't break" defense together. Especially when the pass rush doesn't show up.

Credit to Dorsey for getting both safety spots situated and picking Ward. Brilliant moves out of him

My question to you is; is Greg will Williams bad and the defense is playing top 4 in spite of him or is he a good coordinator? Or is it a little bit of both?

He didn’t pick Peppers, Sashi did. Also you need to throw Derrick Kindred in there as some games he gets the most snaps. Let’s keep it honest in here.

I think he meant by picking up Randall, peppers was able to love to his more natural position.

No, you misunderstand. Dorsey traded for Randall which allowed Peppers to move back to strong safety. This is what I mean by, "getting both safety spots situated."

Kindred is fine, I suppose. I haven't really noticed him much when he's on the field. I don't think he has a future on this team once Peppers starts getting the majority of the snaps. So no, I don't see how he's a pillar in this secondary

I just don't understand him switching to zone defense late in games or after someone gets hurt. Nor do I understand why he still uses the Angel defender every so often. Along with putting guys like Garrett in coverage. So many of his decisions just seem unnatural and forced. The talent is there and his coaching is at least competent most of the time. I just feel like a better coach would get the full potential out of this defense and not put guys in awkward positions.

I'm not sure whose responsibility it is to manage snap counts whether it be Hue or Gregg. But Garrett, Ogunjobi, and Ward playing every snap sounds a bit extreme. Is that normal for NFL defenses, could've sworn even top guys get subbed out every once in a while?
