It would be very difficult, but not impossible. An exercise in mental discipline can be a good thing.
Maybe if the site owners saw that some of us can talk issues without an obvious political slant they would open things back up.
It is not so much an aversion to politically discussion as it is a distaste for extremely partisan political talk peppered with insults and personal attacks.
I don't even mind political slant. People feel a certain way and try to back up their arguments. I try to learn what I can from people that disagree with me. But discussions often become circular, focusing on the quality of sources, bickering about which facts are accepted, complaints about posting style, etc. And when things got heated, they would shift into rule-breaking territory with the personal attacks, yes.
The thing is, we CAN talk about politics without it being as testy as it's been, but it becomes really difficult the more polarized we are, not only in our opinions but in what we even see as reality. Hell, a lot of stories don't even start a conversation, it just launches one side into a trollfest.
Can we discuss feminism, race relations, or terrorism without politics coming into play? Not likely. But CAN we (note: we haven't ) keep it civil and let arguments go when they become circular and the only thing being accomplished is escalating derision? I'd say yes but, and I admit I haven't always been part of the solution, we haven't in a while.
