A Veteran Big

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Brad Miller is a starter, I dont see the point if trying to get him if he's going to be coming off the bench ($12 million) when it's not something he's accustomed to.

Mikki Moore, or Rasho would be better alternatives.

Our search for that veteran presence in the front court is getting poked at.

"The fact that the Cavaliers are even rumored to be interested in either of these guys is a sure sign of desperation in Cleveland's front office. It's not clear why there's desperation - neither Howard nor Wright has any prayer of out-playing Anderson Varejao or Ben Wallace for minutes at the four, but we don't make up the news . . .we just write about it."

Cavs FO Getting Called Out

So are the Sixers desperate because they signed Donyell Marshall?

Well we're looking for a 4th big. Philly would use Marshall only in spot minutes, definitely not in their top 4 bigs. He's going to purely be used for a 3 here or there.

We'd like our depth big to be a guy that would be willing to accept the role he's coming in for #1, and also be a strong presence for Hickson ..a guy that will work with him in practice and serve as a player coach within the player ranks in a way. Those attributes would be a big plus for any depth big eventually coming to Cleveland.

It's sad because I really think Joe Smith would have been a very good mentor for JJ Hickson. I don't think we are going to find another quality guy like Joe Smith was.

Sorry to immediately attack you with a question, W&G, but have you heard anything about the Cavs having interest in anyone besides Wright? The only legitimate info I've seen is that we worked out Wright a while back, and perhaps looked into Howard. Just wondering if we've shown legit interest in others already, or if we're mostly standing back and not really trying to rush a move? Thanks if you can answer it at all!

Because adding depth to a team screams desperation. I guess San Antonio's signing of Mason was a desperation move, right? These journalists are clueless 99% of the time. We're not looking to add a big to play a significant role, we're just looking for an insurance policy.

Tony Battie is like that, but the Cavs have no shot at getting him, sadly.

From everything I have heard, fans don't care about Miller. They just want him gone and start new. He may have been a starter in this league, but he is on the backend of his career on a team going nowhere.

Wally, in all likelihood, will be coming off the bench ($12 million). It is what it is.

Rasho is a more likely candidate though.

The search is really for a 5th big to only provide veteran depth and to possibly only fill in for emergency purposes. I don't see the Cavs taking on a high salaried player to fill this role.

I doubt we'll see any big name or someone that will get everyone excited. A player like Brad Miller would be nice but his salary and the cost to acquire him make him highly doubtful.

A player who I haven't seen mentioned and who is available as a low cost FA is Aaron Williams who was with the Clippers last season. He would fit the veteran big profile and is someone who would accept their role. Williams has always seemed to be a player who works hard and hustles which would fill the requirements W&G brought up. Not a big name but a realistic name.

We're showing patience. Don't want to make a move with a guy and then have a better opportunity surface right after the fact ...we have multiple options. Some would be seen as nice, but most are mundane roster fill type options.

I'd like to see Joe Smith set free at some point, that is my dream scenario ....but don't know how realistic it is...

OKC might do him a favor during the season and let him go after he works with their young bigs for a while...you never know. They aren't winning anything this year and they know it. Be great to get him back....that would pretty much complete the roster.

Even though I'm mad that Seattle no longer has a team, the OKC franchise would be my 2nd favorite in the NBA if they let Joe Smith go and we were able to pick him up. How crazy would it be if they were the 3rd team in each of our 2 big trades AND they let go of the 1 player we wanted back from those 2 trades? :chuckles:

Don't worry once Dallas continues it inevitable decline: hopefully Cuban will feel the need to jettison some of his enormous contracts with 30 yo Dirk as the enticement. <offering a="" blood="" sacrifice="" to="" the="" basketball="" gods="" as="" i="" type="" this="">[offering a blood sacrifice to the basketball Gods as I type this]

On a more serious note, we're not doing anything big till closer to the deadline. Just feel Ferry feels good enough about Hickson to let him get 10-20 mpg and like the Mo Williams signing particularly if we get West back in the fold.</offering>

Well, the logic the writter is using would work in that scenario as well. I honestly thought the Cavs were going to make a move for him. Vetern Big, can fill when needed, knows the system, and from all indications an all around good guy.
