A Veteran Big

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I love the Ferry offseason philosophy. Some people get anxious, Ferry keeps it cool.

Stuck in a Paper Bag

1. Jim Paxson: "Oh, no!! I'm in a paper bag. Quick, give me a phone. I can call Danny Ainge or someone else to get me out of here. I'll just throw them a future draft pick, then they can throw me some benchwarmer to get me out of this bag."

2. A frequent poster in Trade Ideas: "We have been in this bag for ten minutes, and it is obvious that Danny Ferry won't be getting me out of here. We are screwed. I bet Warkenstein or Pritchard would have gotten us out of this bag by now."

3. Danny Ferry: "It's just a damn paper bag. Chill out. If I wait this thing out, the rain will turn the bag into a puddle of brown mush. Then, people will be asking us to get this bag away from here."

4. Kareem Abdul Jabbar & Robert Parish: "Hey Chief...think we can smoke this thing?"

We're showing patience. Don't want to make a move with a guy and then have a better opportunity surface right after the fact ...we have multiple options. Some would be seen as nice, but most are mundane roster fill type options.

I'd like to see Joe Smith set free at some point, that is my dream scenario ....but don't know how realistic it is...

could you give us a little hint who these "nice options" are or could be? :)

If we're waiting to see what shakes out then we'd optimally wait until training camp when teams have to start settling their rosters.

All signs seem to point to an acquisition of some sort to sure up this big man situation. Here is to hoping it is one of the "nice" options. I'm still praying for the man with the million dollar smile to be given a pass to freedom so he can rejoin us for Championship bliss and plenty of wide open jumpers.

After reading this post I couldn't help but be reminded of Austin Powers in a nutshell. "Help! I'm in a nutshell! How did I get in this nutshell? What kind of shell has this kind of nut?"

But yeah, Ferry does keep it cool. Fans want him to jump, but that just leads to reckless acquisitions. I'm still thankful we passed on Jason Kidd earlier this year.

I was just talking to my buddy about that last night. Last year, when Kidd was letting it known that he wanted to be traded, and LeBron was campaigning to bring him here, I was wanting him too. However, Ferry knew the real deal, and it paid off. We didn't have the assests to land him either way, but even if we did, it would've been a disaster. He's scared to shoot, and the Cavs can't afford to have anymore scoring liabilities with Ben in the lineup. I still can't believe what the Mavs gave up to get him. Not only did it hurt them in the short term, it's really set them back in the long term as well.

You're a weird man...

This from the guy who introduced me to leadership pickles. My girlfriend showed the jpeg to her CEO... he just stared and said: "WTF is this? What... WTF? I don't know if I should be mad at you or... WTF?"

The idea of Jim Paxson trying to GM his way out of a paper bag made me smile through my day. I'm just posting to entertain myself.

I never said I wasn't weird...

Frat Five ?

Ok so we are looking for a veteran big to presumably be our 4th big in the rotation, thats fine, but I am thinking we need to look beyond just this year. Most would agree that AV will opt out at the end of the year. OK, we know this and we very well could trade AV. Most assume Z will pick up his 1 year option after this season, BUT I think this is just an assumption. Z is getting up there in years and realistically this may be his last shot at big cash. Say Z goes 14 and 8 stays healthy and opts out??? Oh man now we have just Ben, JJ and whoever this vet big is we are supposed to be trading for.

Losing both AV and Z would really hurt this team. Everyone just assumes Z will end his career with the Cavs, but if Z opts out should the Cavs give Z say a 3 year 30 mil deal to stay with the team. Keep in mind that that deal would hurt our chances of landing Wade/Bosh etc...

I think Ferry is waiting because he is hoping to deal for a better quality big than is available now. Because whoever we trade for could be our starting center next year. Age is a problem with our bigs, as is their contract status'.

We definitely need a big, maybe not right now, but for sure by the deadline.

I would be SERIOUSLY shocked if Z walked.........then again if he is pissed about the Olympics....

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong or back me up if I'm right, but I think I remember an interview with Z at one point. I think he said he intended to play out his current contract and then retire. I assume that includes picking up his option year. It didn't sound like he had any intention of dragging out his career until he couldn't really perform any more.

It wouldn't surprise me if we resigned Z after 2010 to a MLE type deal and bring him off the bench towards the end of the year, before the play offs a la Lindsey Hunter.

I dont care if he's waving a towel at the end of the bench, Z deserves to be apart of the Cavs winning the title, even if he's in a suit at the time.
