AV, Cavs agree to deal - 6yrs, $42.5 million

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Are you telling me Wally made $19M last season? Seriously? Or did he just meet all of his high-five and ass slap incentives?

na he made 14mil. that is just the cap hold on his rights. basically how much we are allowed to sign him for this year. Last season both Ben and Wally made more the LeBron, infact, I dont think LeBron has ever been the highest paid Cav for any given year.

Hoopshype numbers are only good as a last resort.
Forinstance, Varejao can't get 11.1% raises.

I'll stick with these numbers:

http://www.storytellerscontracts.info/resources/09-10salaries.htm

Thats a nice link. I never realized that KG + Allen + Paula's sallaries put the Celtics over the cap. I knew it took up most of it, just didnt realize that thier contacts added up to more then the cap. No wonder they cant hang onto anyone.

This dude is SOOOOOOOO earning his money right now.

I love you Anderson Varejao.

When I see him make a great play, I think about this contract and smile. Great to have a key building block locked up for a reasonable price over all Lebron's peak years...

to think people were saying he was overpaid!

What are you, a necromancer or something?

A quick browse through this thread reminds me of how many panicky bitches need to be smacked.

I would like to point out that 2 years ago I said this would be the contract he would get, and then this year when he got the contract I said it was fair for both sides. 6'11 guys with Andy's skillset are very valuable. Especially when they are on the correct side of 30.

Andy is an integral piece to our puzzle. His stat sheet would be much more valuable if the NBA counted .5 rebounds every time he smacks a ball to one of the guys on the perimeter.

Not me. See below...

Very happy to have him back. He's a key contributor to this team and it seems so easily forgotten how much of a factor he has been in past wins.

One could argue that he's our most important big.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement that Andy can play alongside Shaq. He doesn't NEED to have a jumper to be out there with Shaq. Mo, LeBron, Delonte, Parker, Boobie...you get the picture...all have excellent jumpers and can hit from pretty much anywhere on the court. So why does AV have to hit jumpers?

Answer: He doesn't. Not at all. All he needs to do is exactly what he's been doing for the last several years: be the glue big.

I just took a dump that looks unmistakably like a Laker fan on his knees in front of Pau Gasol.

I never saw a problem with paying him as much as Drew was getting, which would have started him out around $8m and would have come close to getting him his $10m/yr ... at least on average. We've got one heck of a bargain right now, but it's a long contract and its final value will be determined by how well he holds up over the length of it.

In this thread my main concern was what signing Andy would do to our cap space and options in 2010 free agency. It was the first all in move, that DF made followed up by Parker, Moon, and Jamison.

Data has dug into the database and pulled out some original thread posts....

Great. Hope it doesnt strap us in 2010 but I know it will.

PIP: :chuckles:

LeBron told Anderson he was staying past 2010 according to a couple sources close to the Coconut factory Anderson's family lives by in Brazil..

ajz20:

Why was this considered "Big" I mean it was pretty clear the market for his servcies was litimed at best, and it would only eb a matter of time that he and the Cavs came togther. I was hoenstly hopeing for somethign more. I will take it I guess.

Typhoon:

Man I wanted Hakim Warrick...

Paddington:

I'm not bashing AV, believe me...I love having a guy like that locked-up in a backup PF/C role. But that's all he is and all he ever will be...a backup.

Splitz:

Next step is to iron out that jumper so that it's more consistent. I think there is definite potential there to expand on that part of his game.

BodegaBayCav:

Based on Ferry's past examples: Sasha, Boobie, Delonte, etc., fifth year will only be partially guaranteed. AV will make a nice piece in a future trade or an adequate center. Besides Lebron likes the way Anderson sets the high pick.

Brother Redbush:

all i can say that if fegan is looking to get the signing done now, he must know he's got no other team's interested, and we are offering far more than a mle type deal, which ..in my opinion is WAY overpaying for him.

ajz20:

I just done see it. Andy is what he is. He may get a bit better, but you cna count on 8pg and maybee 6-8 borads. He is decent but, there are plenty of his type in the Nba.

MYoung23:

4-5 more years of Teflon Andy having people go gaga over his 3 spoon fed James layups and his 2 flying offensive rebounds he gets a game.

Solid and needed player but way overvalued here especially his post defense or lack thereof.

I know the rest of the NBA is happy because they get to commit another defender to James for 4-5 more years.

More money = more expectations.

Amherstcavsfan:

Quite easily the most overlooked part of Andy's game. People seem to think he is some defensive wizard when in reality, the only thing he does is take charges. His low post defense is awful because he is damn weak.

Th3xTrUtH:

he shoudlnt be getting anything more than the birdman which was signed at five-year, $26 million contract

if he thinks he is then hes waaay off..

CalBuckeyRob *the 2nd of his only 2 posts:

On teams that feature lots of players that shoot, it is valuable to have some players who do not demand touches on the offensive end to stay involved in the game. Varejao is that type of player. I think he is complarable in role to Kurt Rambis on the classic Lakers teams.

After hearing of the initial reported deal of 6 years $50 mil (which by the way, the deal is actually 6 years $48.3 million [according to hoopshype]...not sure why it says $42.5):

MYoung:

Someone call the Special Victims Unit the Cavaliers GM just got raped

flamez:

That's about 8.3 million per year. That is ridiculous.
IMO, that's a very dumb move.

What does Andy give us besides hustle and energy?

People have this misconception of him being a good post defender or something. He was just another guy who Dwight humiliated by overpowering them.

Andy also got abused by Bynum and Gasol when we played the Lakers. He's good for just getting on the nerves of Rasheed, and if your paying him based on that then there is something worng here.

I don't like this move at all.

Northstar:

Ugh. What an ugly contract. I really hope we are S&T'ing him now more than ever. 6 years, $50M?

Might as well waive bye-bye to LeBron with that deal; our cap space is screwed next year now.

sailfish:

Wow, did we overpay.

Northstar:

CV gets 5 years $35M. Andy gets 6 years $50M. There is something extremely wrong with that.

-KingofKings23-:

What the hell are you doin there Ferry?

Spending 8.3 million a year on a role player that has good enrgy, Ok defense and below average offense. What the hell are you smokin?

I dont like this contract one bit.

qaws23 *apparently he's paying part of the salary:

liquidfire *banned:

i'm sorry but i cant stop laughing.

gortat is making 5.5 mill a year, hes better then andy
birdman is making 5 mill a year, there the same players imo
zaza is making 4.5 mill a year, zaza might be better.
cv is making 7 mill a year.. cv is better

im sorry but this is kind of sad.

cmstophe: :bigcry:

Terrible contract. Absolutely awful in almost every sense of the word. No 2010 cap space.

And so on and so forth....and I decided to stop at page 28 of 67 because it was getting ridiculous lol.

^^ Hahaha Ruin cap space. hahahaha Andy is awesome. His play will most likely help LBJ stay. hahahaha Honestly, besides Mo, who has a lot to prove this postseason, and JJ who has a lot of work to do this offseason, AV is the only young talent worth sticking around for. I love me some Boobage, but he ain't helpin to keep LBJ around.
