Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I didn’t know 77 was still around after making numerous bets about him leaving the board over the success of Johnny Manziel.

Or long winded rants about how he’s done being a fan because (insert dumb thing here).

What were the bets he made?

Im so Happy we didn't pick up Rosen, he never looks into, after the 2 first quarter picks didn't even attempt to really be apart of trying to stop the defender. Yes, I know a quarterback blah blah, but I know damn sure Mayfield is doing everything he can trying to make the tackle. Also, seeing him walk of the field after calling a time out yelling and just in a trance, walks past a coach trying to talk to him. dude is a douchebag. Starting to see those "character issues". Then you got Mayfield hyping his team, not looking beat, giving his heart and soul. Just complete opposite spectrums.

Rosen's career is over because he didn't make a tackle last night?

There were a ton of people on this board who were VERY much in on Rosen as the top QB.

My recollection is that it was something like 50% Rosen, 30% Darnold, 20% Mayfield.

Mayfield will always be compared to Rosen/Darnold/Allen/Jackson because that is the class he was drafted in. It’s inevitable this kind of talk will be around.

But yes, the point of 77’s post is to point out the groupthink... once again.
You can call it groupthink. I think it was more of a matter of wanting to adhere to conventional wisdom after whiffing on a whole array "out of the box" type quarterback picks.

As awesome as he is, Baker Mayfield is still short compared to the so called ideal for NFL quarterbacks.

Manziel and McCoy were both short and supposedly had some other intangibles that were supposed to compensate. Weeden was old. Quinn was fool's gold. The list goes on and on when the Browns simply did not make what anyone would consider a conventional move to prioritize getting a quarterback, we always tried to either shortcut the process or we tried to outsmart conventional wisdom.

This draft had 3, 4, maybe 5 quarterback prospects who may end up being better than any of our choices since Tim Couch.

Mayfield was rated highly except for his stature. I liked him except for that single fact. Therefore I had him third on my list behind Darnold and Rosen.

It turns out that Baker has much better arm strength and accuracy than I realized and along with his already known leadership skills and yes, his moxie, may make him better than the other two. We'll see. He's a Brown and I am all in

And three Josh Allen fans :chuckle:, I know Sportscoach was one, midwestcav (Wyoming fan), and Spectre I believe

In fact, it was 40% Darnold, 38% Rosen and 12% Mayfield.

However, the voices for Rosen were certainly the loudest, probably causing people to think it was much more.

That makes sense.

The Rosen voices definitely felt like they were the loudest.

I wonder how many people picked Darnold in that poll because it appeared for a couple of months straight that he was going to be the guy and they just wanted to say they supported the guy all along.

Never once said his career is over, he could be really good. Just pointing out that Rosen doesn't give ME the vibe he genuinely truly loves the game or is as much a genuinely true leader, such as Mayfield.

I picked him because I think he would have been the best choice and I still do.

Happy to be wrong and have Mayfield turn out to be good as well of course. If that occurs.

Their misuse of Dave Johnson is criminal

Criminally awesome for my fantasy matchup though.

Coming out of college, I thought Rosen was the most polished of the three. He seemingly could make all the throws and has had the arm strength since his freshman year.

My biggest concern was how much of a douchebag he was. That isn't what the Browns needed. I will be the first to admit I didn't think that Baker's personality would have such an impact on this team but it's obvious Dorsey did his homework in that regard. We needed a guy that instills belief in his teammates, which is huge for reshaping the loser mentality.

Call it an "intangible", one of our favorite words, but in this case, it's completely relevant. It wasn't as simple as who is the best prospect, we needed the best prospect for the browns.

This poll was from April 18-onwards. By then it seemed pretty clear that Rosen was not going to be the pick and a lot of the bandwagon flipped to Darnold.

In February I'd guess it were more like 60% Rosen, 30% Darnold, 10% Baker

You can count at least me among that group for sure.
