Browns and the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There's two ways of looking at today's trade deadline...

The Browns know Watson will be back soon and feel at least reasonably confident he'll be able to play at a high level when he returns.

OR

The Browns know Watson is completely fucked and know there's no fix for this season.

Regardless of PJ Walker I saw DTR do some of the most absurdly awful shit in that Baltimore game I’ve seen from a QB at practically any level.

I’m fine with going back to him if KS prefers to. I’ll trust Kevin on that.

But it was more than just “he’s a rookie”
I do feel like people are forgetting just how stunningly bad he was

Like you can genuinely make a case that was the worst browns QB performance in a decade+

This really. Idk if I watched a different game than everybody else but as much as I'd love to see him get given another opportunity and go out and be great I saw a lot more than just a rookie who wasn't prepared to be the starter.

People convinced themselves he was good enough to play vs Ravens, and I think they are similarly tricking themselves again to want him back in. If KS decided to keep him as the starter he probably loses all 3 of the same games PJ is 2-1 in

Yeah my favorite was when I turned it on to watch the second half after a couple halftime beers I talked myself into… okay maybe we can score and get back into it.

And DTR takes the snap at like our own 28

Runs backwards pretty sure like 20 fucking yards….

And drops the ball at the 8 yard line or some shit.

Then I had about 3 more beers.

This DTR discussion begs the question:

Did the Browns really give DTR zero first team reps before throwing him out there? Did the Browns really expect Watson to start against the Ravens? Did they really tailor the offense to Watson's skillset that week and then plug DTR into a Watson plan?

...or was that only true in Planet Bullshit.

I know DTR was thrown into a really bad situation for his first start, reportedly on 2 hours notice. But he was so unspeakably bad that I do not think you can roll the the dice on him in an extremely winnable game that we really need to win vs a bottom 3 team in the league vs a rookie QB making his first start

Walker is really bad too but we’ve been in the every game he’s started

It’s not an exaggeration to say DTR could’ve easily had 7 INTs vs Baltimore. I think it’s a big gamble to throw that guy back in there in a game we really need

It was always about the rust of Watson and our relatively thin receiving room. Throw in the Chubb injury, the rust/injury status of Watson, and trading DPJ, and I can’t fathom any Browns fan feels confident about things moving forward this season.

Its about our defense, we are still the #2 rushing offense without chubb, and DPJ hasnt done crap this year, but the qb play has been crap. If Watson can look even 80% of his past Houston form, we might have something.

But that is a huge if on Watson.

Agreed on Watson.

But, I believe our defense has played a bit above themselves (they haven’t exactly looked top tier the last 2 games).

Hunt has stepped in nicely, but it’s been echoed all over the board; if we can’t get prime Watson, then this season may be wasted.

I think our defense will counter punch. They figured out short underneath crossing routes, I think Schwartz will counter punch.

I wonder why they traded DPJ. I thought they would potentially trade him before because he was going to get paid more than they could pay but with his current production that wasn't going to be a problem.

He has been getting the most snaps of any WR on the team so it's not like he fell out of favor with Stefanski and the coaching staff. Is this just a situation where the GM wants the guys he drafted and got in free agency to play so he gets rid of the player ahead of them?

I would much rather Bell or Tillman earn their playing time and take snaps away from DPJ than just opening up the spot for them. Wouldn't we have gotten a comp pick if DPJ walked in free agency?

DPJ's contract wouldn't have likely amounted to anything significant enough compensation pick wise..

Think it's simply the case of a team not likely extending a player so trading him to open up playing time for some of their young guys (Bell and Tillman) while also opening up another roster spot..

Just a tough move after seeing DPJ ascend the way he did..
