Carter Almost A Cavalier?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This deal is a no brainer. Too bad Ferry didnt pull it off. People tend to forget that VC is still a prime time player and he defends, is a ball handler and can guard 2,3 and some 4's.

That move gets Cle in contention for several rings.

Who knows, maybe the deal still could happen. The Nets said no now, maybe they'll change their minds. Not a big Carter fan though.

Im the biggest Tar Heel fan I know, and even I wouldnt want to touch VC and that contract.

He makes Larry Hughes look like Cal Ripken Jr

I would much rather keep Wally, let his contract expire and sign a FA than take Carters ugly contract.

Is there any big time FA's next year?

Im not a big fan of Carter being my go to scorer or go to guy in the clutch. As a bonafide second option...? Sign me up.

I would have rather had RJ, but Carter, Tmac, Baron, Joe Johnson, Redd, Mike Miller. Any big guard who can be a prolific scorer. I dont care how he scores, as long as he can hit the the 3 guys will have to follow him out there and space the floor. Whats more important is that they be able to defend. Id even take Tayshaun, but Dumars would never let us have him.

Too much emphasis is being placed on shooting and scoring. If thats the case we have a great career shooter in Wally. He could hit his stride and we could do well with his scoring. What we cannot do well with in the p/o's is his defense and lack of ballhandling/rebounding..

Elton brand , Shawn Marion, baron Davis, Jason Kidd, Allen Iverson Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Andrew Bynum(i think the last 3 players have options or are restricted)

Either way we will still be in lux tax most likely so i dont see us signing any big name FA.

But don't we have like 30 mil coming off the books if we make no trade??

Damon Jones - $4,172,432
Joe Smith - $5,205,000
Wally - $12,275,000
Andy - $5,356,000

Plus, since Snow is retiring we get more expiring right?

We still can't sign anyone?

yeah but we are like 15mil over the lux tax right now... and we have to sign Gibson and West so we might have like 5 or 4 mil to spend next year. 2010 is when we can spend some after signing lebron

O ok, thanks.

This would have been a major talent upgrade for the Cavs. Carter's contract is a killer though and I don't think I'd take that on.

Most everyone has stated the need for a quality #2 scoring option to pair with LeBron. Carter could definitely bring that. As a #1 option VC isn't that great, as a #2 he looks a whole lot better. Another scoring threat like VC also is a major upgrade for the Cavs offense.

Cavs can't make moves or plans out of fear of losing LeBron or the Nets signing him. They just need to go ahead and attempt to wisely build a long term contender.

100% agree with you there Narls. I don't subscribe to the no Knicks/Nets theory, although without getting the Knicks pick, which we didn't, I wouldn't want much of what they have anymore. You have to do for self first and let the chips fall where they may. Our ability to add championship pieces trumps any kind of financial help we can supply a team. We don't exactly have a wealth of teams out there to trade with that value a role player packaged with some expiring contracts. The Nets are doing a fine job clearing the space without our help so what difference does it make really? That said, his contract is fairly hideous and I doubt he can be a key contributor for the remainder of it but to say that he wouldn't improve our squad is kind of unfair.

At first I would have said no but once I took a step back and looked at it again I would have made the trade if I was Ferry. Consider the fact that we'd get Carter with only giving up Wally. We still have some expiring contracts plus Varejao. If we bring back Gibson and West after that, which would still more than likely happen because Gilbert seems willing to pay, we've got depth and some tradeable assets.

If Wally is our starting shooting guard at the beginning of next season, someone please give me a gun. :banghead:

Re: Carter was almost a Cav?

Wow...

I am with the hatred of VC for the obvious reasons but simply Wally for him is hard to pass on

I know all the bad thigns...contract and injuries etc

but his talent next to LeBron when 100% would have been a real nice fit

I'm actually a little disapointed now that I think about it....I am sure that will go away in 10 minutes but It could have been nice
My thoughts EXACTLY. In fact, I had to re-read this post and make sure that you posted it and not myself, because this is something I would think and post, no doubt.

Re: Carter was almost a Cav?

The only scenario it could hurt you is if something came up better later on and you needed a big expiring contract like Wally. We have some others but none that big for a straight 1 to 1 swap like that.

who are we going to get better than vince straight up for Wally? That deal would have been a major talent upgrade.

If LeBron leaves, it won't be because because we're paying an all star too much money to play with us, it'll be because we don't have all stars playing with us. Trading Wally for vince makes it more likely he stays, not the other way around.
