Carter Almost A Cavalier?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I am not disappointed that we didn't land Vincent Lamar Carter... Not at all...

Although, no player (not even LeBron) has ever taken the league by storm like Vince Carter did in the 99-00 season...

yeah but we are like 15mil over the lux tax right now... and we have to sign Gibson and West so we might have like 5 or 4 mil to spend next year. 2010 is when we can spend some after signing lebron

only if we suddenly blow up our team - why is lebron going to hand around on a team that was just blown up. We need to win a championship in 2010 with players who are signed long term. There is no way a path to keeping LeBron long term means dumping our roster on 2010 to rebuild.

Wow, I made a joke about Vince coming to cleveland the night of the draft, then this comes out. I KNEW IT!

Take that people that don't believe in conspiracies!

I had a feeling Ferry would play for Carter. I believe he was trying hard at the deadline last year.

VC>>>>Wally

Providing no injuries with Vince as the starting SG it would have put Cavs back in the finals.

I'd throw in AV, Sasha, Joe Smith, etc., to make this deal done...

Although I can't see the New Jersey Nets trying to help LeBron out and win a championship...

I don't get why people are so down on Carter...

Beside his age, I don't see any major problems...

First off, offensively... He is exactly the type of player we need next to LeBron... He's the type of player that can take over games and create for others when LeBron is not in or not healthy... He's the type of player that can lead a team, more so then Redd or anyone else out there... He has experience doing it and knows how to... The Nets went 11-18 without Jason Kidd... But I think that is a big improvement over what we would be without LeBron in Cleveland... After Kidd left, he was putting up real nice numbers, and pretty efficiently, not to mention he was getting around 6-7 assists per night...

He's an efficient scorer and it's what I love most about him... He can score (he's scored upwards of 20PPG in 9 out of 11 years), but the can do it efficiently... His FG% last year was 45.6%, which is 1 percentage point above his career average... His 3PT% was at 36% last year, 1.5 percentage points below his career average... His FT% was 82% which was up 3 percentages points from his career average... But what was most impressive was that all his %'s increased each year in NJN, showing that he's not on the decline...

His TS% was up around 55%, which is pretty decent... His PER was just below 19... His USG rate was 24.4, which was 27th in the league... His effective FG% on jumpers was 46%...

Not to mention the Nets were +9.4 offensively with him... And in the past years it's been around that area too... So not only is he efficient but he also effects those around him positively, as the team seems to play a lot better with him on the court offensively...

Also I don't want to forget that he ranks pretty favorably in 4th quarter scoring and in Super Clutch and Clutch scoring... And you know how we suck in the 3rd quarter? That happens to be one of VC's best, last year...

Defensively, he's solid too... While he's not an All-NBA defender, he's definitely better than Redd and has actually put up solid OPP PERs the last 3 years at the SG spot (14.3, 14.3, 14.8) and the team has done well with him on the court (-4.0, +1.0, -5.9)...

And to top of all these stats... His Roland Rating, the last 3 years, has pretty much been consistently around the high 8's and low 9's, and even up to the 11's... That ranks around the top 15-20 players in the league and I think it's pretty safe to say that he earns his money worth...

Now I know everyone discusses him being soft and injury prone... But I don't really care if he is soft or not... As long as he brings hims proven game and is the #2 option we need... I mean how soft and injury prone can guy be when he's only missed 9 games the last 3 years and 25 the last 5 years...

And the thing I love most about him is that he's consistent... He's not one of those streaky shooters or streaky players... He's a guy who puts up those stats every night and makes his impact felt...

My other concern I have with him, beside age, is his playoff history... He hasn't faired well in the playoffs in his career... But I wonder how he would do as a #2 option as opposed to a #1 option...

Overall, I would like to get Carter... I just wonder how productive he would be ending his prime and going out of his prime... Although, he was shown no signs of letting up...

Maybe we revisit this when NJ is hovering around 8-10 wins going into all star. And we wont have to give up anything else. What are they going to do, resign him?

I think he was playing injured towards the end of the season and had surgery at start of the off-season on one of his ankles.

Getting Vince Carter would cost us less in terms of expirings, hence we could improve the roster much more if we take Carter over Redd, and then package the other guys to teams wanting expirings

Not sure if this was mentioned but Vince has a team option on his 4th year. So basically he expires in the summer of 2010 when Z, Ben, Sasha, and LeBron expire.

I think we do it. Vince might be the best player we'll get. I've always loved Vince and I would love for him to bring a championship here to Cleveland.

not to mention, he plays defense unlike Redd. He isn't the player he was when he won the dunk contest, he is a more mature scorer, who is a better all around player than he was 4 years ago. Would be a perfect complementary player next to Lebron.

Re: Carter was almost a Cav?

i could see this idea being revisited midseason.

I really hope not. This isn't the same guy that jumped over, through and on top of Fredrick Weis. This is the guy who is so apt to shoot jump shots, their PA announcer has a catchy catchphrase he shouts every time he hits a three pointer.

Maybe it's because he can hit those shots? I doubt you'll see a 30 year old player that's had the injuries he's had clowning on guys. It's called aging..happens to everyone...Dominique eventually couldn't windmill through traffic anymore at some point.

That was a VC THREE!!!!!
