i agree. its a low risk high reward deal. get a sg to help your depleted sg position. cdr is going to be a surprise.
Cavs SG position isn't depleted. It's clogged with averageness; average pro's that would make getting playing time really tough for a rookie.
Other than OJ Mayo and Rush, I don't think there was an SG in the draft with potential to be anything better than an average starter in the NBA, and that's after a couple years and if they reach their full potential. There wasn't anything available to the Cavs that was going to replace Sasha, Wally, or Gibson any time soon. Cavs need a starting quality SG now. Even if the Cavs traded future picks and talent to get Rush, is Brandon Rush going to be 1st string SG material on contending team in the next two years? Can't see him being anything more than a bench player on a top team for at least two years, just like Stuckey at Detroit. Cavs already have enough SG bench material, who would make it as tough as possible for the rookie to get any playing time.
After getting Mo, the Cavs don't need a top flight scorer as much as they need a defensive stopper at the 2. Not sure a rookie or sophmore would be ready for that role either.
As it was, the choice of Hickson and Jackson was good because you have a solid training pair: young & talented playing against skilled & knowledgable. Both will learn from each other, compete against each other, and each has a chance at making the rotation this year if they get the Brown defense quickly. Instant extra practice and motivation.
Now if Ferry could have picked up Devon Hardin or maybe DeAndre Jordan to go with those two instead of Sasha Kaun, that would have been better, because I'm still worried about the backup center spot next year, but those guys would have cost talent or picks to get and they are both bigger bust potentials than either Jackson or Hickson.
I got to wonder if Ferry went to Russia to try to talk Kaun into coming to the NBA this year.
