Cavs Summer League Team

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Thomas still looks like the best shooter on the summer league team. He just doesn't know how to play to that one strength. Lotta summer league guards like that.

He's shooting a red-hot 27% from the field and 20% from deep after tonight :chuckle:

Yea he should just be a spot shooter and that's it.

He's trying to be a point guard and a shot creator and all this other stuff. HE was doing that in the regular season too.

I think he'd have a future if he JUST focused on learning how to position off the ball and shoot set shots.

Without looking, it wouldn’t shock me if those were some of the better shooting percentages on the team.

Bluiett, who some on here have spoken positively about, is a quality 9/21 (43%) from deep. Obviously a very limited player (just 2/3 inside the arc with 0 free throws) but there's no doubt he's a better shooter than Thomas.

Shirley, you’re aware that I didn’t think those percentages were actually toward the top of the team.

Obviously not much can be gleaned from summer league other than stuff we mostly knew. He needs to get stronger. Needs to improve his handle. He’s a project.

His passing is exciting. He’s even better than I realized, and I have a feeling he is simply too advanced a passer for the guys he’s playing with. I think he might average six assists in 24 mpg at start of season playing with guys who think and move quicker. He made so many passes that were to guys a step behind or unable to finish.

He’s let the game come to him for so long that summer league really isn’t for him. He’s not a guy to shoot 12-15 times if the shots aren’t there. I think he’ll be better almost immediately playing with much better teammates and just picking his spots until he grows comfortable. His shot looks good. He didn’t hit it as nearly the frequency you’d like to see, but I have little doubt he’ll develop it as it looks smooth. He knew he was the highlight of the roster and people were there to watch him. I think he’ll be much better with less pressure and lower expectations once regular season starts.

I was generally happy with what I saw. He didn’t wow, but the shooting will be fine and the vision and timing is better than I imagined, and something that almost can’t be taught. I know how to improve strength and it’s simply a matter of time. I didn’t play ball at a high enough level to know how much of handle is innate as opposed to a learned skill? If he improves his handle, he’s going to be a nightmare to guard with his quickness and length.

I think I’m done watching this crap.

Like why wouldn’t the cavs try and sign JJ redick for a 1 year 9.5 million(MLE) and trade him at the deadline for parts or picks to a contender at this point?

That’s asset management and getting a good mentor for the young guys for half the year.

JJ Redick might not trust the Cavs because alot of the front office came up under Griff as GM. He was pretty pissed that Griff traded him to Dallas at the end of the season instead of working something out with an east coast team which Griff promised to do or they would buy him out. He wanted to see his family more.

Do the Cavs deliberately stock their SL team with players with zero chance of playing in the NBA?

I don't think they had any sense of urgency to go get undrafted players for our summer league team or for camp invites. They basically had a press conference as soon as the draft ended while other teams were picking up players on exhibition 10 and two way contracts.

For the guys that were concerned with Mobley's rebounding...he had 11 tonight.
Drummond’s 15+ rebound games where he seemingly had zero impact on wins/losses threw me off raw rebound stats for life. Misses happen, someone has to get the ball, but what’s the context?

>were they contested rebounds?
>offensive or defensive rebounds?
>score when these rebounds happened?
>were they taps off his own misses?
>did the player opt for tapbacks instead of grabbing the board?

while I’m glad Mobley grabbed more boards- almost never a bad thing - where did they come from?

just my approach going forward.
