Cavs Summer League Team

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’m perfectly content with what Mobley showed in Summer League. He has a super high ceiling and showed exactly what we know — he needs time. We’re not making the playoffs this year so it’ll be filled with ups and downs. Some games we’ll think we got the next Anthony Davis some games we’ll think we got Anthony Randolph. Patience will be key.

The Cavs?
Summer league. Its a way to get some draft picks’ feet wet while deceiving a bunch of future insurance salesmen into thinking they have a chance at the NBA.

Drummond’s 15+ rebound games where he seemingly had zero impact on wins/losses threw me off raw rebound stats for life. Misses happen, someone has to get the ball, but what’s the context?

>were they contested rebounds?
>offensive or defensive rebounds?
>score when these rebounds happened?
>were they taps off his own misses?
>did the player opt for tapbacks instead of grabbing the board?

while I’m glad Mobley grabbed more boards- almost never a bad thing - where did they come from?

just my approach going forward.

I know, I was kidding. The Cavs are SLIGHTLY more watchable.

"If you don't pass the ball to Evan Mobley, you're not making this team" - things our coaches should say

If they do pass the ball to Mobley they are not makig the team, that is the issue with Summer League, maybe 3 players will make the team per a roster.

Probably a mistake by the org though.

It isn’t that difficult to surround Mobley with players that are a bit less talented but are willing to play a defined role. There had to be plenty of pass first guards who wanted a look and the Cavs should have priorized those guys.

All young big men need help on offense and I think that is why Mobley looked so uneven. Sexton and Garland are probably going to get him 4-5 easy looks a game, wether it is via lobs or dump offs. That will help him build confidence to then play on ball and step out and shoot.

Summer league was honestly the opposite of that, where he was having to take transition jump shots just to get a few more additional shots up. Hopefully they just shut him down.

If it was the other way around I'm sure everyone would complain too.

"Cavs need shot creators, why do we have a bunch of unathletic pass-first guys on the team"

These summer league games have absolutely zero bearing on Mobley's growth and development. Y'all are acting like they don't practice for hours every day.

We already know Mobley can catch lobs. I would rather we take fliers on sharpshooters or wings to find the next Joe Harris.

It sounds like we found a high usage guard who cant shoot instead

Obviously not much can be gleaned from summer league other than stuff we mostly knew. He needs to get stronger. Needs to improve his handle. He’s a project.

His passing is exciting. He’s even better than I realized, and I have a feeling he is simply too advanced a passer for the guys he’s playing with. I think he might average six assists in 24 mpg at start of season playing with guys who think and move quicker. He made so many passes that were to guys a step behind or unable to finish.

He’s let the game come to him for so long that summer league really isn’t for him. He’s not a guy to shoot 12-15 times if the shots aren’t there. I think he’ll be better almost immediately playing with much better teammates and just picking his spots until he grows comfortable. His shot looks good. He didn’t hit it as nearly the frequency you’d like to see, but I have little doubt he’ll develop it as it looks smooth. He knew he was the highlight of the roster and people were there to watch him. I think he’ll be much better with less pressure and lower expectations once regular season starts.

I was generally happy with what I saw. He didn’t wow, but the shooting will be fine and the vision and timing is better than I imagined, and something that almost can’t be taught. I know how to improve strength and it’s simply a matter of time. I didn’t play ball at a high enough level to know how much of handle is innate as opposed to a learned skill? If he improves his handle, he’s going to be a nightmare to guard with his quickness and length.
Yes, if you are a player that makes the right decisions, you won't be able to function on this summer league team. He kept passing out of the double or screening guys but never got the ball back. Mobley was as much the pg as anyone. He looked good when he went and just got the ball. Just having Okoro off the floor made the offense and defense completely fall apart. I guess that is a positive.

There was just no way for Mobley to get shots unless he just chucked them up whenever he touched it. Goes against his game.

Nearly 10 years ago, Terence Kinsey made the entire Summer League unwatchable for me while I was trying to watch Jawad Williams, Danny Green and Skyenga make the team for us

This summer, Broderic Thomas has done everything in his power to honor Kinsey's ghost

First of all, its Badric Thomas. Second, I remember Kinsey well, not saying he was even a bit good, but he was atleast twice the player Badric is. Kinsey driving on a causway in Florida is less painful to watch than Badric driving to the basket on a basketball court.

I’d like to see the Cavs invite Bluett to training camp, but the rest of these non-roster guys simply aren’t NBA players. That include Brodric Thomas, who’s been pretty awful. I’d be happy to swap Thomas out for Cassius Stanley.
