Cleveland Indians Rumors Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Juan Rivera has been DFA by the Toronto Blue Jays. He's right-handed bat, has some pop in his swing, and hits lefties well. I'd expect the Indians to have some interest.

This would be a very solid pickup.

The Phillies got nothing from Seattle for Lee.

The Mariners got Justin Smoak for him, but he's only shown flashes. Hasn't show consistency.

They Got Halladay from the Blue Jays in that deal though.

They gave up a bunch of prospects to the Jays to get Halladay, including their best prospect.. It was basically 2 trades that they made into a 3 team deal.

Phils reach three-team deal to get Halladay, send Lee to M's
By Jon Heyman, SI.com

Roy Halladay has agreed to a three-year, $60 million contract extension with a one-year vesting option for $20 million with the Phillies. All that remains to complete the blockbuster three-team trade involving the Phillies, Blue Jays and Mariners is for physicals for all the players involved to complete the deal that was originally agreed upon Monday and involves two Cy Young winners changing teams.

As part of the trade, Halladay will be going from the Blue Jays to the Phillies, and Cliff Lee will go from the Phillies to the Mariners. Six prospects and cash are also involved in the trade, which has yet to be finalized due to its complexity, and may take at least one more day to be completed.

sucks that aramis ramirez won't budge on his no-trade clause. admittedly, he's a pipe dream at best, but he'd be a great rental piece (albeit a pricey one by indians standards) from the right side

I think Mike Cameron might be a better fit, but Rivera probably is more of a need.

While originally reported at a three-team deal, it's really two separate deals....

Phillies and Blue Jays

Phillies and Mariners

Unless the Mariners and Blue Jays swapped prospects or something, that's two separate deals...they just happened to be arranged at the same time.

I might be mistaken, but I thought Brandon Morrow was sent to Toronto from Seattle in that deal.

He was the guy sent to Toronto for Brandon League.

Ahh, well I remember everywhere I heard it, the Halladay deal was reported as a 3-team deal.

1. We have Chisenhall at 3B
2. His contract is obscene (I believe it's close to 17M next season)
3. I'd rather hang onto our prospects, keep Chisenhall at 3rd and go after a cheaper player than go after Ramirez.

It wasn't- two seperate deals. The Phillies announced the deals together to try and quell the backlash over dealing Lee- it was done as a PR move. In reality, both where completely seperate trades, with Ruben Amaro dealing Lee to try and recoup the prospects he sent away for Roy Halladay. In the end it was a horrible failure (D'Arnaud may one day make it at least palatable) and probably the reason why the Phils failed to go to the WS last year. So it goes, though, water under the bridge.

The Indians can't afford to be: a. taking on any salary, let alone the 7-9M left on Aramis' deal for this year and b. dealing away prospects for a rental like that. The Cubs are in their own financial hole, I don't even see them being willing to eat contract money and take prospects back instead. Some team with disposable income- if there are many left baseball right now- will probably get him on the cheap.

From MLBTR:

- It appears extremely unlikely that the Mets will trade Jose Reyes, but his top suitors would likely include the Reds, Indians, Giants and Mariners, four teams that have poked around for infield help, according to Davidoff. It’s even possible that the Red Sox would pursue Reyes if he became available.

- Though no frontline starters appear to be available, the Yankees are looking to acquire a top starter. Cleveland and Detroit are also looking for rotation help.
