Denzel Ward

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I feel like every coordinator in the history of ever “sucks.” It’s why even if it’s true I roll my eyes when people talk about how they cant wait for the next guy.

Two games in, we will be discussing how he too sucks.

Ward didn't give up anything today. The catches you are referring too happened while we were in a bullshit soft zone, and Ward's zone was near the LOS.

Gregggggggg sucks.

I remember him giving up 1 catch in man coverage. I thought he played great. Carrie on the other hand... how the fuck did he get the contract we gave him?

I think it's just extra frustrating now because we actually have the talent to win games and the coaching is actively hurting us.

Don't really remember Ward giving up much of anything. All those throws over him were finding the holes in the cover 2, and the Raiders were actively playing the matchups across the field from him.

Yeah it did seem that way. Even on the TD Peppers gave up, it looks like he was late rotating but it was a zone coverage soft spot again. Gruden knows the Tampa 2 so well he just ate us alive.

There was a combination of things working against us defensively yesterday. One, Gruden adjusted to the aggressiveness of the Browns blitzing defense and he exploited it with the types of routes he called. Two, Mitchell going out also cost us big-time and forced Williams to change the defensive scheme to compensate. And third, the Raiders receivers are big, physical and fast as a group, and some of our smaller defensive backs were just physically overmatched in 50-50 situations.

I think the Raiders offensive coordinator and Gruden out-adjusted and out-schemed Williams by quite a bit in this game.

His "halo" shrunk a whole bunch last week when Mitchell went off the field.

I’d argue it was the zone defense they ran after Mitchell got hurt. Gruden knows the Tampa 2 better than anyone and exploited. I thought Ward was beat a couple of time but it seems that it was more the scheme. As was posted above it turns out Ward was great.

Ward is good but having a solid DB like Mitchell across from him had a lot more to do with the success of our defensive backfield than your bullshit "Halo" theory.

How is it a "bullshit theory"? This is a well known effect of a shutdown, generational cornerback like Deion Sanders on the 49ers and Cowboys, or even Revis. Maybe you don't agree that Ward is as good as them, but the halo effect is real. Maybe you never watched Deion play though.

Yeah, generational corners like Revis and Sanders

Not rookies who haven’t even come near peaking yet, as Ward is.

Yep I think we are in agreement. The halo effect is real, and while Ward has shown flashes, he still has a ways to go. Still, I think it's fair to say he is a "hit" as far as first round DBs go. We may have to go back to Joe Haden for the last one. Couldn't do much worse than Gilbert!
