Most interesting general scenarios to me:

-Does Brooklyn want to part with Lopez for salary relief and draft picks? Would that interest the Cavs considering is current contract?
-Mavs selling #13.
-If the Cavs can acquire the #13, can we turn some combo of draft picks and/or players to get another top 5 pick? The Wizards were rumored to be interested in moving their pick, but the lottery may have changed that.

To me, the best part of winning the lotto is how it gives us so much versatility after the 1st pick, especially with regards to prospects who happen to fall on draft day. It may be 51/49, but Noel is the consensus best prospect in the draft. If a Len, Gobert, Adams, or the like falls to a later Cavs pick, they can now pick that player with the confidence that they can turn Noel into someone like Porter, Dipo, etc.

I just don't see the same options presenting themselves if we'd been forced into someone like Porter.

Mods, please feel free to move if you consider this redundant.

When one of these possible trades advances beyond speculation or rumor, feel free to start a thread in CavsTalk. For now, I think best in here.

This team just needs to upgrade the tank for wiggin

As long as it doesn't interfere with the "Tank for LBJ Jr." campaign in 2023. LeBron will be coming back for the 2nd time(Cavs 2014-2018, Lakers 2019-2022) then to be 39 year old player/coach/gm. Start the thread up.

definitely start with acquiring 13. hopefully the combination of 13 and 19 will be able to net a higher lottery selection.

You have to assume Dallas's 1 and 1A options here are just taking a Euro to stash and keep off the payroll for 1-2 years(Saric, Giannis, Karasev) or trading for a future 1st round pick.

So not sure 31 and 33 is going to get it done.

i'd even take a year of marion's contract off their hands if that helped...but i'm not the one footing the bill for what would be a 9 million dollar price tag for the 13th pick

Pretty awful trades, why would Cavs hand the Bulls Kevin Love for Deng when we could just sign Deng in 14'. The other trades have us trading Andy for dimes on the dollar.

Agreed, those trades were terrible....would rather just take Noel and keep Andy.

Brook Lopez is definitely a player I would love to have on the Cavs. Perfect fit in the frontcourt and still young. Unfortunately the Nets are in 'win now' mode. Don't see them making such a deal unless they could use the pick to land a Dwight Howard. They would have to dump a ton of salary to get far enough under the tax apron to even make such a s&t. Maybe the Cavs could help them by taking on salary but the chances of such a deal seem really slim.

Why help any team by taking on salary. We have enough assets to get the players we want by not just forcing ourselves to take on salary and letting other teams get better.

Disclaimer: This is puuuuuuuuuure speculation based on limited knowledge of the CBA. Also, I used the "hoopshype" NBA Salaries page.

Okay, follow me here:

Trade 1:

Dallas gets: Picks 31, 33

Cleveland gets: Pick 13, Shawn Marion, Vince-sanity

Why it works for Dallas: They clear over $12 million in cap space. Gives them the ability to make a run at two max free agents, whether that's D12, CP3, or Jennings.

Why it works for us: We get over $12 million in EXPIRING CONTRACTS (my favorite thing in the NBA). Marion can fills the SF spot for a year. We also acquire the 13th pick, which we could then package with the 19th pick to move up in the lottery.

Our updated cap space: Including the $12 million from Marion and Vince, and with the $5.5 million from our #1 pick, we're at: $44 million (I did NOT include our Qualifying offers to Omri and Ellington in this calculation).

In the case that we do not want to use those picks, we can trade them to:

Trade 2:

Indy gets: Picks 13, 19

We get: Danny Granger

Why it works for Indy: They are a solid playoff team without Granger this year. He is an expiring contract, and would most likely walk after the end of next year anyways.

Why it works for us: We get yet another expiring contract of $14 million! Also, I believe the cap is $58 million, so $44+14 = $58. And, we add another small forward to our team. By trading the picks, we don't have to worry about them counting against our cap.

So, our team would be (assuming we take N-Squared with the first pick):

PG: Kyrie, Random Vet, Waiters
SG: Waiters, VC, Granger
SF: Marion, Granger, VC
PF: TT, N-Squared, Andy
C: Andy, Zeller, N-Squared

Please feel free to tell me how "this will never happen". I know it won't. The Hoopshype salaries page is fun though!

You used 2 first rounders on Granger assuming we already have Marion and took the time to type "N-Squared."

Indy is going to have to pay David West big money this offseason, then give Paul George to MAX next year, plus make a decision Lance Stephenson AND upgrade at PG. Danny Granger will practically be given away. In no scenario do you need to and especially want to give up one top 20 pick(let alone 2) for Danny Granger.
