Free Agent 2012 Targets

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I know Wilson Chandler has been discussed by a few people in this thread, and I too would love to see him in a Cavs uni next year. Pair him with an SG like Beal or Lamb and you could have something special. Found this interesting tidbit regarding Chandler while reading the weekend dime:

http://espn.go.com/nba/dailydime/_/page/dime-120210-11/nba-dwight-howard-more-trade-chatter

One source close to the situation, meanwhile, says restricted free-agent swingman Wilson Chandler is giving legit consideration to negotiating a mere one-year, rest-of-the-season contract when he returns from China to the Nuggets in March. The idea there is that Chandler, with perhaps only a couple of months left in the Nuggets' season at that point, might prefer to play out that short span on an expiring deal because he could then become an unrestricted free agent in July.

Even as a RFA, I don't think the Nuggets could afford to retain him. They're going to have to extend Lawson next year, they just extended Galinari, and Nene's making $13 mill. The Cavs could potentially be very appealing to someone like Chandler. There's a gaping hole at SF, so he'd be the unquestioned starter. Uptempo offense that suits his game. Gets to play with an excellent PG for a long time. And of course, he'll get paid. Chandler is exactly the type of player the Cavs need to be going after. He's still young and his best basketball is ahead of him.

I've had a couple of scotches, but I could have sworn I saw the words "Hibbert" and "Max extension" in the same post. Somebody tell me that was an accident...

Greg Oden anyone?

Having knee surgery again. Depends on the price tag. But he is still only 24 and we have some good doctors in Cleveland.
at this point the only team with doctors good enough to rebuild him is phoenix. i doubt the price tag will be particularly high though after this procedure.

though if it did work out, it would cement tt's future on this team as a bench player. not that that's a bad thing, but just saying.

i also still hate the chandler suggestions. not a fan of overpaying for anyone this early in the rebuild and that is especially true for role players. some idiot is going to give him way more than he deserves and i do not want that to be chris grant. that said, i did gain a lot of respect for him because of his handling of the china situation. at least one nugget is committed to his team, unlike that piece of shit jr smith.

Oden would not preclude TT. He is in my mind a center and TT is not. But my read on Oden is that he is done, so unless there is a miracle at the Cleveland Clinic, it ain't happening..

I think there are other big projects we should explore first including our own Eurostash Sasha Kaun. Oden has brand recognition but has actually delivered less than Thabeet for example.

I would like Chandler at a reasonable price. As long as we are not going after players in their 30's I think FA is a good way to get role players.

My point was not based on position but rather skills. Neither Thompson nor Oden has any kind of range which results in horrible spacing and a very difficult time on offense. That is a bad path to go down.

Aside from my belief that there is absolutely no way he is had at a "reasonable price," I'm not really interested in role players at this point because we don't know which role players the team needs.

The Cavs have one for-sure long-term starter currently on the team. With that many holes, I think it's better to focus on getting the main core in place before worrying about long-term role players especially in free agency. Parker is different because he's here to act as a mentor/role player, not as a long-term contributor.

Drafting them in the late 1st or early 2nd is another story and actually acceptable. Sort of like OKC did with Ibaka. When they drafted him they still had tons of holes, but the pick used on him was of marginal value so there was little downside.

I agree I would hold off on FA for another year. But, players like Chandler are the type of guys we need eventually. Not saying he is a "must get" by any means but I dotn think it would be a horrible move. I do agree that we should wait until 2013 or 14 before really going after FA's. However I would much rather watch Chandler play then Omri Casspi.

Another name to throw out there is Ersan Ilyasova of the Bucks. I know not the most exciting option but he just turns 25 later this season. Is an improved rebounder and his inside game is better. The big plus is he would bring a big who can spread the floor with his 3 point range. Cavs don't have a player like that going forward and with Varejao & Thompson likely getting most of the C/PF minutes.

I wouldn't spend big money on him and he isn't a player you go all out for but he would seem to fit and fill a need while also being a long term option. Is also an unrestricted FA.

If the Cavs *really* want him, they could probably get him.

Ilyasova gave an interview the other day and said point-blank that he was going to sign with whatever team gives him the most money. :chuckles:

Much, much better player than Anderson from the Magic. Would be a good get.

76ers have 4 rfa's this summer with a 63 million payroll.
Memphis has two restricted free agents coming up with a 62 million payroll

Lots of teams have several restricted free agentd hovering at 50 million before they try to resign their free agents.

but theres alot of quality players out in the league the cavs can make offers to even if they got froze out of the free agent market.

Are you taking that list from HoopsWorld?

If so, the asterisks indicate players that are unrestricted now but could also be restricted by the time free agency rolls around, depending on what their teams decide:

----
Players marked with an asterisk are not on rookie scale contracts (for former first-round picks) but are eligible for restricted free agency as a player with three years or less of NBA experience. Players finishing their rookie scale contracts are marked as restricted until decided otherwise and their Qualifying Offer is listed. Teams needed to officially issue that Offer by June 30, 2012, to make the player restricted.
