Frye to Suns 2/yr $3.8 mill (pg. 37)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Man I just remember going into this offseason Windhorst put out an article saying the Cavs would be a marquee destination for FA's due to Shaq + LBJ, etc. etc.

But multiple times now we've been turned down now by guys who we've offered similar/more money to relative to other teams.

Not the end of the world obviously, we still upgraded the team but still is somewhat frustrating so far. At least to me.

Beside's Ariza what marquee free agent has turned us down?

Artest by the sounds of it

Don't really count CV as he just got a better deal

Artest said we never contacted him. We being the FO, he said he heard from LeBron and that's it.

I wouldn't say marquee FA's - I was saying CLE was supposed to be a marquee destination, meaning FA's would come here over other options because of the lure of LBJ + Shaq and a chance at the title.

That was the case with Parker, but in Ariza's case wasn't. Artest would get similar money from both us and LA, he chose LA for obvious reasons. Frye would get similar money from both us and Phx, he chose Phx. McDyess would get similar money from both us and SA, he chose SA.

Not trying to whine about it, just saying it is frustrating because a McDyess/Ariza/Artest and to a lesser extent Frye would have been good additions, we were offering similar money (at least I assume we were), and they went elsewhere.

Welcome back Joe Smith. Might as well now go for the known who is a proven fit here.

Kleiza would be a nice option to bring in but I still have a hard time seeing it be able to work out with what the Cavs have left to offer. I'm not even sure if a good S&T can be worked out that makes good sense for Denver.

Whoever the Cavs bring in at PF has to have good range and consistency on his perimeter shot. That is now lacking with any PF currently on the roster. Despite being a solid player I never saw Bass as the best fit. Shooting has to go out to the 18-20 foot range not just extend to the 10-12 foot range in order to provide the floor spacing the Cavs offense needs.

I would have like to have seen Frye here but no one should be that upset to miss out on him. A still young player in his position will go where the minutes are, especially if they're offered by a team in an area where he's spent most of his life.

We're looking at a player who will likely get 15-20 minutes a game at best no matter who's signed. We don't need a 35 minute a game player who we need to put up major production.

Didnt say the sky was falling...But you are looking at this team through rose colored glasses.

We didnt go to the finals last year. We lost to a team that got pummeled by a team that improved (like we did) in the offseason.

66 wins is great, trust me...But it's ok to be critical even when you are successful. You can always get better (LA won the championship and they got better).

Ill say it again, Im a Ferry supporter, but is this it? Really? This is the push to keep Lebron?

Clearly the WHOLE organization has breaked its back to keep Lebron, but Im just not blown away by our off season aquisitions...that is all.

I agree with you completely. This team got a lot better, but we didn't add anything to a young core of players. We got some veterans, but I was hoping we grabbed a guy like Frye and maybe he ended up working out. People forget that we almost traded Gooden for Frye his rookie or sophmore year. He got mixed up in the New York Kincks debacle and then was behind Aldridge, Bust Oden, and Przbilla. If Frye would have got minutes between Shaq and Lebron, he would have suprised a lot of people. He could have turned out to be a nice young piece to add to the core of Mo, Delonte, Lebron, Hickson, Jackson and Boobie.

I like Varejao and think he is a huge asset to this team, but he is clearly suited to come off the bench and bring energy. He is never going to be a big contributor offensively against top level teams. And don't think his offense is really going to improve. He has the most definable offensive ceiling in the entire league. His offensive game consists of wide open layups. Maybe he hits a few wide open jumper against the Grizzlies. But in the playoffs? Come on.

This just forces Lebron to play a lot more of the four with Parker at the 3. Which could end up being a really good thing.

Here's our offseason in a nutshell:

Our tire is punctured. Instead of getting a new tire or patching the old one, we're just going to continue to fill it with air over and over again whenever it gets flat.

Adding two old guys to the team might be fine for now, but it does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to shore up the future of the franchise.

You are writing as if you are assuming that's all she wrote until the trade deadline. Why do you think that? Also; why don't you think the Cavs are much improved right now and as is? The only other team in my mind who we might be a tad under right now is LA. ... not much, but just a tad. I don't get why people might think we are done, and why they think that's all there is to this off season. I believe it's not done yet. I believe things are being worked on as we sit here in our boxer shorts, hanging onto every tweet and twaddle that comes across the screen.... not me, but some of you.... lol

I also believe something is coming so don't fret. :)

Yeah, but remember that free agency is just high school recruiting for pros.

Then you have to look at the players on the list

McDyess - Full MLE from San Antonio, plus a healthy SA is a title contender.
Ariza - Wanted to stay close to his child. Already won championship
Artest - Always wanted to play for the Lakers and with Kobe
Frye - Family is from Arizona.
Villanueva - Got highly overpaid by Detroit

Yes, Cleveland is still a marquee location for free-agents that want a title. But there are other things to consider. Family counts big if the money is the same.

Championships are the goal for every player. But sometimes younger players think that they can get one when they're ready. The reality will catch up to them later.

Me, I'm not frustrated that players went elsewhere, that the choice they have to make. There are other players out there that fit what the Cavaliers need, and that have shown interest in playing for the Cavaliers.

Then there's always the economic downturn. That's going to affect teams Like New Orleans, Memphis, Golden State and Charlotte. Deals will be available, maybe not grand larceny deals but many will border on robbery.

Ferry still has time and many teams/players/pieces to work with to make a very good team better.

Really? Because we didn't get CHANNING FRYE?

REALLY?

I really wasn't a fan of Frye anyway. He'd be a decent big off the bench, but I didn't want to sign him. One of my friends from New York kept asking me why this team had any desire to sign him, and I couldn't come up with a legitimate reason. His offense can be had elsewhere through trade or even through a few options left in free agency. His defense is terrible, and to go from AV to Frye would be a horrible transition.

For those guys complaining about the off-season thus far, I'd love to hear your plan to turn this team around (realistically)..

Bunch of armchair quarterbacks on this board...

As I posted earlier in this thread, I'm not sure how much desire the Cavs had in Frye to begin with. Further; I don't know for sure we ever offered him anything at all. Did someone in the know actually say this? I don't think so. I think Windy might have said we were might be pursuing him, but did we really?

Ariza wanted to go somewhere he could be assured a starting spot and could get more opportunities to be the man. Ariza is 24/25 with a championship already as a role player. Basically this 5 year deal is a chance to show case what he can do for his prime years so that he could get a bigger contract. Here, (especially if LeBron said he was staying) he would always be in the shadow of LeBron. He now has a chance to set himself up for a large contract in 5 years.

Frye will have a much larger role with Phoeniz especially if they move Amare possibly and Shaq being gone.

MyDyess was given an extra year on his contract. Something I haven't heard on this board mentioned is that McDyess probably wants to make up for the money he lost in the buyout to go back to Detroit.

I'd rather have Kleiza anyway...
