Guardians Hire Stephen Vogt as Their New Manager

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In his career, he played for Bruce Bochy, Brian Snitker, Bob Melvin and the great Craig Counsell.

Heck of a coaching roster over the years.

That's a great point.

The Guardians will introduce new Manager Stephen Vogt today at a press conference at 1:00 pm EST. You can probably listen in on some sports radio stations. I also wouldn't be surprised if it's on MLB TV and maybe YouTube.

Some of my random thoughts on the presser:
  • Seems like a genuinely great guy. Easy to see why he gets so many compliments.
  • Really thought about managing when he was 24 years old and in A ball.
  • He is very enthusiastic, and getting to know the organization.
  • Absolutely a "people person", communication is a strong suit.
  • Has already had lunch with Shane Bieber in Arizona. (whatever you want to read into that.)

Agree on all points. Loved how he said he can work with position players because he was one, and he can work with Pitchers because he always did
I cannot see how the players cannot love him.

Or Dolan was too cheap to book Vogt a non-stop ticket on United and saved fifty bucks on a connecting flight on American through Phoenix where Vogt ran into Bieber at the airport bar. /s

After watching a video of Vogt fielding balls in the dirt before his last game for the A's in '22 and today's press conference with the stories of him throwing manure around after getting the job offer volunteering with children's charities and repeated emphasis about the org and family approach, it is clear he is foundational/fundamentals person who also prioritizes people and relationships.

The one tidbit that stood out to me was when Vogt mentioned it was the player's clubhouse and he learned from Bob Melvin about knowing your people.

I'm glad we didn't write a check for another $1m a year to snag who is a better manager today in Counsell for one who comes off as genuinely excited for THIS opportunity and organization.

One other interesting note on Vogt.
He was a 12th round draft pick. He didn't make his MLB debut until he was 27. Yet, he had a 10-year career, and was a 2-time All-Star.
He might have some good thoughts for guys that seem to be stuck in development, or maybe a AAAA player.

Dolan being cheap is so old and boring
Tito was one of the highest paid managers
The organization is well run for the money coming in. It’s a business. They put a good product on the field and they don’t have to take a 50 million dollar loan out to make payroll

DoLaNz R cHeEp isn’t a thing with regards to off the field personnel.

One of the best paying organizations in the sport in that aspect. Why people stay for so long.
