It's kind of crazy how similar Moon is to Ariza...
Size: Moon 6-8, 200... Ariza 6-8, 210
MPG: 25.9, 24.4
PPG: 7.2, 8.9
RPG: 4.6, 4.3
APG: 1.2, 1.8
TOPG: .54, 1.06
BPG: .75, .29
SPG: 1.08, 1.67
FG%: .468, .460
3PFG%: .355, .319
FT%: .850, .710
Every stat is almost identical, with Moon a little better shooter overall, Ariza maybe a little better scorer and at creating. Obviously age is a big difference, with Ariza being 24 compared to Moon at 29. But for half the price and a much smaller overall money commitment, Moon was a smart and underrated move by Ferry after missing out on Ariza. And I think I'd actually prefer Parker and Moon to just Ariza.
I agree. I posted these before and they show you Moon and Ariza aren't far apart, at least when it comes to the last year's regular season. Fact is Ariza was a fairly mediocre role player last season, but his big postseason is what really got him paid this offseason.
Age is also a factor. In my opinion though, I think too many people (even NBA GM's) just assume that if a guy is a successful role player he will only get better and eventually evolve into more than that. In reality, this doesn't happen often and sometimes leads to big failures. Sometimes guys are just best suited for the supporting roles they were asked to play. Especially in the triangle offense next to Kobe and Pau. Remember Devean George in an Ariza-like role with Kobe and Shaq?
I'd rather commit to a guy like Moon for 2 years, then Ariza for 5.
Everyone seems to think that Ferry is done making moves. I don't. Shaq was a biggie, but I have a feeling that a big surprise is due between now and September. That stretch forward that everyone seems to want... Ferry will pull off something big to get him. I'm thinking a #1, Hickson, Gibson and parts for someone like David West.
The fact is, Ferry is on borrowed time. He knows that he must field the best team possible to please the King. As currently constructed, this Cavaliers team is not the most talented in the NBA. They are certainly contenders, but this team was last year as well.
David West? Carlos Boozer? Amare Stoudamire? David Lee? Something is about to happen. I can feel it in my bones.
I'm torn on this. West is the name I can't get by. New Orleans has pretty well known financial issues and I'm not sure trading Peja or Chandler is going to happen. West would be a nice fit here for the Cavs. His contract is not anything crazy, kind of similar to Mo's, and it probably only has 2 years left on it as the 3rd year is a player option for $7.5 million.
New Orleans needs to do something. They tried to move Chandler here and then again for Ben Wallace to Phoenix. Didn't happen. No one is taking Peja at this point, and the Hornets aren't trading CP3.
The Hornets have almost $50 million tied up in Chandler, Peja, CP3, and West. Add in Mo Pete and Posey adds another $12 million or so. Will there come a time when the Hornets determine that moving Peja or Chandler is unlikely? I'm not sure.
West is a solid value, but they are going to have better luck moving West + Posey/Peterson then they are Peja or Chandler.
I still think they're probably going to make one more run at things this year and see how things start. However, if they get off to a slow start, West could be put on the block.
