Jim Schwartz: 2023 NFL Asst. COY

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In Schwartz's defense, the Lions team he took over was 0-16 and never even played in close games. He moved the group from one of the worst in NFL history to competitive as a head coach.

I would be very surprised if Schwartz got another opportunity to be a coach.

He was really bad with Detroit. He's had health problems in the past. And above all else, he's from the defensive side of the ball which is not where many teams are looking for retread coaches.

Fair or foul, older coaches from a defensive background just don't often get a second chance, especially if their first chance went really poorly.

I can't imagine anyone is kicking down the door to give Vic Fangio or Steve Wilks or Steve Spagnuolo a second chance, ya know? Schwartz is in the same boat as those guys.
Your logic notwithstanding, I’ve maintained from early on this season that Schwartz will get HC offers. We will see.

Shut your mouth! Schwartz was a terrible HC and should never get offered another lead job again!!!

...so he can be the Browns DC until he retires from football.

He might. I just don’t see how he would be more appealing than some other defensive background candidate like Mike Macdonald who doesn't have the "I already tried this and failed miserably" stink on him.

Jim Schwartz is not getting any HC offers. None. Maybe an interview but that’s it. He’s too old and coached a side of the ball that teams don’t look for when hiring head coaches anymore. It’s rare if it happens and if it does Flores or Quinn will probably get one instead.

We can probably do the math on Schwartz getting an HC offer, or not...

What teams are likely to need a coach going into 2024-25?
Carolina and LA Chargers, for sure. New England, Washington, Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta? I can't see any other teams as realistically possible, but clarify if you disagree. Thats 7 jobs.

Who are the hot names mentioned? Ben Johnson, Jim Harbaugh, Aaron Glenn, Antonio Pierce, Dan Quinn, Kellen Moore, Eric Bienemy, Bill Belicheck, Brian Flores, Brian Johnson, who else? John Gruden has been mentioned in Vegas, but nowhere else. That's 10 guys (not including Gruden) for the 7 positions. I can't see Schwartz being more desirable than the other 10. If he gets an offer, it's gotta be because a number of those guys turned down offers.

I am definitely not greasing the wheels for Schwartz to leave. He was the best off-season addition for the Browns, no question about it. The most attractive job out there is the Chargers head coach, and I think that will end up Jim Harbaugh 's return to the NFL. He played QB for the franchise for several years and started his college coaching career in San Diego.

I really just didn't like the assumption Schwartz did a poor job simply by looking at this win/loss record without context.

In the mean time if Jim doesn't find a gig as soon as next season, Browns should reward him with the highest paid Defensive coordinator in the league.
