Jim Schwartz: 2023 NFL Asst. COY

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’ve had a night to think about it, and I genuinely wouldn't be upset if Schwartz was fired or retired for health reasons.

Obviously I have extreme doubts that they will actually get rid of him, but this defense is not really a particularly complex one, nor is it a heavy adjustment one either.

What happens as we move forward when the Browns ending up losing some talented defensive players to free agency and they don’t have higher end guys at almost every spot?

Schwartz being a lot better than Woods doesn’t mean he’s got the schematic chops to lead a Super Bowl caliber defense in 2024 and beyond, unfortunately.

Like I said, I don’t expect a change to be made and would be very shocked if there was a change made.

I’m just not sure how the Browns defense could possibly be better than it was this season.

The odds seem very high that the defense is likely going to be less talented from a personnel standpoint moving forward than it was this season.

And if that’s the case, and we’re not confident that Schwartz is magically going to develop schematic counter punches overnight, what are we really left with?

A slightly worse defense that’s still susceptible to being easily exploited by the more creative offensive minds and better quarterbacks?

There’s no Clayton Tune’s taking snaps in the playoffs. There’s very few completely inept coaching staffs.

I mean, and yet, he has proven he can do this already.

On January 19, 2016, Schwartz was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles to be their defensive coordinator under coach Doug Pederson.[27] Inheriting one of the league's worst defenses, Schwartz made an immediate impact. Implementing his 4-3 defense, Schwartz turned around the defense that previously ranked 30th in yards allowed and 28th in points allowed to 13th and 12th in his first season and fourth in both categories during his second.[28]He would eventually lead the defense to his and the Eagles' first Super Bowl championship in Super Bowl LII.[29]On January 7, 2021, Schwartz announced that he was going to step away from coaching due to health issues and resigned from the Eagles.[30][31]

Give him some time here to actually succeed or fail, rather than assume he cannot adjust.

Right. Thats why I said in 2024 and beyond. Because it’s not 2017 anymore.

Seven years is an eternity in the NFL. What’s old is new, what’s new is old. What worked 7 years ago is - in many, many cases - not likely to work today.

I just... I can't agree with this statement. Things come and go all the time and the defense was good at points. The defense was terrible on the road though, which needs figuring out. Not too mention the defense wasn't immune to injuries this year either. We were running out 3 and 4th string safeties and one point and still holding up, at home anyway.

This reaction seems knee jerk and likely to cause unnecessary churn instead of focusing on cleaning up deficiencies. If we have the same issues next year? Ok, maybe there is an issue. This defense was being talked up all over the NFL and I would rather see if we can keep that going than start over.

What was the Titans DC that he worked with a year ago? Bring him on to consult and get him to mix it up a bit. They were awesome together a year ago.

Gotta figure out why the defense was DOMINANT at home and hot ass juice away from home.

Shane Bowen. Who is an Ohio native…

And may be out of a job. I'd love for them to team up here again.
I do think it's fairly both notable and telling that the 2 best pocket QBs the Browns played absolutely carved them up.

Need to do better to confuse these guys next year. Man-to-Cover 2 ain't gonna work against these dudes.

it’s hard to wrap my head around just how bad yesterday went but a few things on the defensive side that stuck out:

  • Guys looked scared to tackle in the open field. It was like they were so nervous about giving up the big play that they froze up and thus… gave up the big play. That Emerson attempted tackle on the sideline that turned a first down into the 70 yard touchdown was about as inept as I can imagine. There were lots of other examples that didn’t result in a touchdown, but guys just looked hesitant in the open field
  • There was almost no swarming to the ball. The amount of times Singletary got out of a jam by breaking a single tackle while other browns just kinda jogged around as if the play was already made was maddening. So many potential negative plays turning into 4-5 yards and putting them in favorable positions. Where was the aggression?
  • I watch Myles pretty much every snap of every game. Since the shoulder injury he has been noticeably worse. I know I’m about to be hit with the time to throw stat but I’m just talking about his explosiveness, bend, and impact on the game consistently. He’s flashed those at times but he hasn’t been anywhere close to the dominant force he was the first 10 games and our defense heavily relies on that. Stroud was under no duress the entire game and there were plenty of plays he held the ball for very long developing routes. No one got home

I really think the speed and shiftiness of their WRs gave them a lot of trouble. Newsome is basically just a slot corner and without Delpit we didn't couldn't handle the types of WRs they had.

Most defenses aren't built to handle more than 2 of any specific type of receiver. We saw when we had 3 playable TEs that teams just couldn't match up.
