Joe John$on is a Loser

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Disagree...reports out there were the Cavs were really bummed they missed out on RHJ and even tried to acquire him from Portland before Brooklyn traded for him. That doesn't scream "we aren't going to give him a chance" to me...RHJ would be awesome on this team, both now and as a developing player, which we are lacking in right now.
did not know that, I don't read draft reports or anything bc I know very little of the college guys.

Some people are really selling Joe short.

It's not totally unrealistic to think he could end up starting on this team. Not right away, we need to see how he fits and how he adjusts to a complimentary role. But the guy is an absolute shot maker and a very underrated playmaker. He would look great in that 2nd unit that also features Kevin Love. He would look great in small ball lineups.

Despite struggling early in the season, his percentages rival JR's this season...who I think we would all agree has had a pretty good season. Joe has also been on a tear as of late. He also seems to be more efficient the better the team he's on - which is also encouraging.

Just two years ago, when the Nets still mattered, Joe shot 45% from the field, including 40% from three, and was an all-star.

It was a long time ago, but...the last time Joe was on a true contender, in Phoenix, he shot 48% from three. Forty. Eight. Percent. On 4.5 attempts per game. Again, long time ago, but he hasn't lost that shot making ability.

I think he could absolutely be for us what Iggy is for the Warriors, but with more shot making and less high level defending. Joe won't be more than average at best on defense, but at least he has good size. Bottom line, at the very least he takes all of Richard Jefferson's minutes and becomes our 9th man. But don't be surprised if he becomes more than that.

This is why I think they should target JaKarr Sampson with the second roster spot.

Honestly, if they fill one of the open spots with a vet like Johnson, I hope they sign a young guy so they can hold his rights over the offseason. But I'm not sure I'd want Sampson, and I think I'd want them to look to the D League for the player...someone like JP Tokoto really intrigues me.

This has been a pretty calm safari thus far -- no Cheesecake Factory, no airplane tracking --- I think we should at least be twitter bombing @TheJoeJohnson7 to tell him to take a buyout.

This actually isn't a bad idea: not just for the shits and giggles but these guys have egos and not better way to inflate that a bit then with some flattery

Said it in the Summer and I'll say it again. Johnson is washed up and has been since his last season in Atlanta. You'll all be treating him like Marion by years end if we get him. He's flat out awful. He did nothing his entire stint in Brooklyn. I also said in the Summer he would plummet this year and he has.

He did nothing...but have an All-Star season and make the playoffs 3 of his 4 years there...also, he's way better than Marion was with us because he doesn't rely on athleticism to be effective.

Fail to see how people can be against bringing in a teams current #1 option to be like our 6th option...and for the minimum too.

While not as good he will fir a A.I type role for us. He is still effective but only if he comes off the bench. Him and Frye along with a Moz, Mo, TT, Shump, or Delly is solid and we can get him on the cheap why not? Heck even if he gives us a Barbosa type production is a help at this point.

I'd say he's Brooklyn's 3rd option behind Lopez and Young at this point. Still would love to have him though. He's been playing pretty well since January.

Obviously he doesn't lead in FGA, but with Jack out, he has had to create for those 2. He is their only legit perimeter threat in a current perimeter dominant league...don't think it's a coincidence his assist numbers have been damn good for a wing since Jack went down...he's been really, really good the last 2 months too.

He had a horrible start to the year but over the last two months JJ has been playing great. In fact, since January 1st the Nets are +14 points per 100 possessions with him on the court (!). That's goddamn incredible when you consider what a lousy team they are. Over the same period, with JJ off the court they are getting outscored by about 25 points/100 possessions.

Again since January 1st, JJ's effective field goal percentage is 57% and his true shooting percentage is 59.4%. Both stats lead the team, unusual for a small forward.

I would LOVE to get him here and think the comparison to Iguodala is on point, not because he is anywhere near the defensive player obviously but because he gives us all-star calibre talent off the bench. I think he will fall off a cliff at some point pretty soon, maybe next year, but based on the last couple of months he definitely still has gas in the tank.

Thing is, I don't see a chance in hell that the Nets buy him out. Why would they? They still have to produce a basketball product and get fans to games, and with the way he is playing now he is one of their best players. Without any draft choices they have no incentive to tank, and anyway I can't imagine they want to turn into the 76ers.

The only incentives they could have are:

1.) money

2.) being "kind" to established veteran players.

Both of those require Joe Johnson actively asking to be bought out, if he is making the request, and say, is willing to take the buyout as if he had a $20M salary this year, rather than a $24M salary (just as an example), it would save the Nets $4-5M. They'd save about $1M more, because whatever he gets paid by another team (probably veteran minimum) gets subtracted from what the Nets owe him.

Also, if a vet who has put in his time in this league, and is in the last year of his deal, asks for a buyout from a team going nowhere, so he can chase a ring -- then you have to be a jerk to say no. And no team wants to look like a jerk to well respected vets.

But you're basically right - the Nets have no real incentive to buy out Joe Johnson, unless Joe Johnson provides them the incentive (by asking them to do it).

Another fair point, is that Johnson might not want to do it -- he'd probably give up $3-4M in salary, in order to have to play 2-3 more months of basketball. Lots of players would give that up in order to chase a ring, but not necessarily everybody.

I'd say that's Brook Lopez, but I agree with the rest of it. I think JoJo fits our team really well. That would give us an extra playmaker/finisher/scorer/dribbler/shooter. Having him as our 3 with LeBron as the 4 and Love as the 5 (maybe Tristan or Frye) would be a perfect small ball lineup against Golden State. More consistent than JR, a better scorer and more durable than Shumpert and just better than RJ. I might even lobby to start him if he does get bought out and signs here.
